People like covers because they can identify with them and participate.
It's up to the individual, but let's not start hating on covers and acting holier-than-thou about them please.
Doing only covers always gets you nowhere (unless you want to be a cover band). The way those songs became familiar is because the artist played it enough for them to reconize it. You play an original enough, people will reconize it, and if they like it, they will want to hear it more.
Also, I did write a song about my cat the day he was dying. I was singing to him, and it seemed to help him ease the pain. It's a very sesitive song. I was very attached to him, and human or not he was a life long friend, meaning more to me than some people. I have played it to people, and they think it is very touching, then I tell them it's about my cat's last hours (that I loved since I was little, and have no memory without him), and they still feel the same about it.

if you promoted your show as a guitar only show w/o vocals, I would be hardpressed to go,and I am fan of the music your playing.
