So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

I've always just muted those two strings, so if in the event I accidentally do hit them they don't mess the song up.

As a beginner myself, I've found a few DMB songs to be fairly easy. I'm just learning Lie In Our Graves and not having too much trouble with it. I'll Back You Up didn't pose too many problems either. Grey Street isn't too hard and Halloween is pretty easy, That was the first song I learned and the only trouble I had was changing from the Am to the Bm and back, because of the barre chord.

I know everyone says that the timing for The Stone is troublesome, but I don't really have too much trouble with that, either. I'm far from accomplished on it, but DMB fans will definitly recognize it if I'm playing it. I can't change chords with that damn stretch in the #41 intro at all, but the Crash stretch doesn't bother me too much. Proudest Monkey is very esay to play, but singing with it is another thing. And it is boring just to play it. And I don't think Rhyme & Reason is too hard, either, once you get the timing down.

Those are my suggestions.

Minarets is definately one of the easiest and best dave songs. Its very simple AND it sounds really cool.

R&R is a good song to get your fingers up to speed.. Drive in Drive Out is a good song to get used to dave's style of playing IMO, The stone takes a while to get that "spider" hand motion to go along with the song. ants marching is a good one for slides/ movement for chords. SMTS(so much to say) is good for getting sliding down, as well is wwys(what would you say) the jam's for WWYS and Too Much are good to get dave's jam style too..

Iam not sure how well you play but if I could start over and relearn the songs I know how to play now I would have started with Stay(wasting time). Why? Well I am glad you asked. Dave mutes alot in this and getting video of him playing this song is a DVD away. Stay is not a cake walk but getting good at it will help you with alot of other dave tunes. another one I would start with is One sweet world for the same reasons. remember these song are alot harder than some of Daves tunes but when played correctly they will give you a head start on learning all the others and how to play in the style of Dave Matthews. One last thing I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to watch how dave plays these song watch video / DVD or download shows study study and trust what you see.

I dont want to crap on whoever said 'the stone' is a good beginner song, but unless you want to get discouraged and throw your guitar in the corner I suggest you stay away from that one for a little while, unless your finger skills are really good.
Good beginner songs? Lie in our graves, ants marching, say goodbye (uncommon chords, compared to most artists, but relatively easy to play), gravedigger. Thats my $.02, anyway

Blue Water is an easy song to learn...It is only 2 chords.
