i don't care all that much that dave is trying new things but when he just don't get it right someone should say something. look at ben harper now you may like him or not but he has changed his style almost every cd, but it sounds great. if you can do it then do it but dave changing his style ain't working for him at least i think

sorry if none of yall understand what i'm trying to say

Amen to that man. I still don't sleep at all on occasion because I just can't put my guitar down. Now, I'm no saint, but honestly, playing guitar has been my worst habit in a long time due to the fact that I don't get any sleep because of it. Ok, sorry for digression, back to the ED banter.

old school?

Unread post by allnatural35 » Wed Jul 30, 2003 12:21 am

Honestly, these tracks are not old school Dave Matthews...but then again why do they have to be? I find more and more as the decade goes on and the generation which has become acustomed to great Dave Matthews music grows older, many of us also find ourselves clinging to the "good ole' days." This cd is just another example...it's new and it's different. Many frown upon it complaining, "it's not the way Dave used to be" my response to this is...good. Dave is an artist who has made a reputation based on change and diversity. This is a new and different sound and I applaude Dave for making a totally zesty cd and for cutting an album that he enjoys and showing that he's not afraid to change it up every now and then. Dave has shown with this album and with the previously controvertial Everyday, that he is a diverse musician. His talent and pure skill come through on these new tracks and while others may sit in their cars and/or homes and cry and sulk because the good ole days have gone, i pity you. Embrace the artist we have all come to love and moreover, respect his need to change and respect his ability to diversify his sound. Peace baby!

I aggree.
I went through this w/ the Everyday cd...and after listening to it a few times, it grew on me. I did NOT like dave at first...I couldn't understand anything he said...his songs made no sense...they didn't sound like normal songs...then I saw the band in concert for the first time and that was it.

We might forget that dave's songs took time to win us over(some will say it didn't, and that's fine, in case, I was NOT an instant dmb fan). I'm just saying that it took me a while to really like the song Warehouse...now it's one of the best ever...or Recently. I knew eventually I would love these songs, but it took a while. Greystreet's another one I knew I'd like if I gave it some time. Think of how angry everyone was when the Everyday cd came out...much anger...but now I see a bunch of you(not counting the com007 guy, he's ALWAYS loved the Everyday cd) who think Fool to Think or What You Are are awesome songs. For one thing because you saw them live, and that's important.

We forget that we've heard Dave's old songs 1,000,000 times. New songs don't always knock you down. Be patient and give 'em a chance. Yeah!! Do that.

Agreed. Very rarely does a CD realy floor me after the first listen. I'll wait for the CD to form an opinion, but from what I hear on the MP3s the songs are definitely very Everyday-like, which is fine. Things evolve, including songwriters.

i liked everyday, besides maybe two song, right off the bat. every cd i on either i like it right off the bat or i dont never like it. as i stated before change is good but if you change into something that sucks i'm going to point it out. i would tell dave these songs suck to his face if i got the chance to well at least the studio versions of them. hopefully they will sound so much better live.

thought this was an interesting comment from dave:

Matthews said there’s really no comparison between the songs on “Some Devil” and those on his band efforts. And as the album nears release, he says that he’s excited, but he is being cautious not to get his hopes up.

“Like most of what I’ve done, it’s done, and so now I just move on from it. I’m excited, I hope people like it, but I try not to get too excited because what if everyone f+++in’ hates it? Then I can let it go like an empty beer can. That’s the way I look at it now: My part in it is done, and I hope people like it. But in case they don’t, I’m gonna try not to invest too much in it that I might be disappointed.”
