Hey, nice resurrection. And I think Dave plays the alternate verse for another reason besides his hands hurting. Dave has pretty big hands, He's like 6'2.and he has played since he's nine. I have a feeling that stretching isn't a problem for him. NO one can really tell if his hands hurt during Crash because none of us KNOW dave, But he does play the alternate verse all the time, and I couldn't tell you why. Maybe he just gets sick of the same pattern over and over.
I always thought that Dave used simplified fingerings a lot because shit was just too tiring to play over a whole song, and unnecessary when you have a full band or Tim to fill in.
Like 41, for example, I always saw the verse to be a simplified, easier version of the intro. So like in the first chord, he just removes the middle two notes from the A chord and adds back one an octave higher (C) and something with harmony, in this case an F#. Sounds good and you can play it for hours.

He also repeatedly talks about his carpal tunnel syndrome in his hands. I am sure some of these akward stretches cannot help that out.Usaj88 wrote:dave really rarely goes to that alternate way of playing it .. you underestimate the man lol. this is DAVE MATTHEWS were talking about, and i know hes maybe gone to that alternate way a few times but come on he's been playing it for how many years? give him some credit

I think you're right on! When you play with a band you don't have to fill up as much space.jellyfish wrote:I'll check it out.
EDIT: I could not do that. It wouldn't sound like Crash without the pinky. Ahhhh. The benefits of having a band back you up.
~ And rain washed away all her tears and I smiled done away was the sum of all my fears ~
My intro to 41 (big stretches) is nowhere near the chord structure of the verse. Are you playing the Luther intro?max wrote:I always thought that Dave used simplified fingerings a lot because shit was just too tiring to play over a whole song, and unnecessary when you have a full band or Tim to fill in.

what you could do, is mute the B string and play the e string open. the last note of that crash is 5th fret B string which is an e note and equal to an open e string. it will not sound the same. open strings have a different ring than closed(?) strings have
For us living any other ways was nuts. with all the goodie-goodies working shitty jobs for bum pay checks, took the subway work and worried about their bills were dead. they were suckers, they had no balls. if we wanted something we just took it, and if anybody complained twice they got hit so hard believe me they never complained again
