Lie In Our Graves Solo Guitar
I got an open mic night coming up and would love to play "Lie In Our Graves" but its just me, with no one to solo during the jams. I think it the first little jam sounds fine solo when dave mostly just plays the A minor and B minor chords. But the second longer jam, where it slows down I think is just too slow and kinda kills the momentum of the song. I'm not a good enough guitarist to pull off some sort of improv solo thing so what do u suggest for the second jam? Cut it out and just go straight to "and i can't believe..." ? Shorten it? I know Dave hasnt played the song completely solo since '93 so what your advice?

Hooray. Okay.. the jam sounds REALLY full if you do this with some mutes. (And also pull the strings kinda like finger pick and hit up your guitar like a slappity slapp.. its the hammerons that keep this interesting, and they make up the rythym improvvy part of it. do them how you like.)filmdude100cms wrote:well, back in the day people only got like 3 minute LIOG because there was no jam, but doing that will disapoint many people used to a longer one... i know gumbo has a nice thing he does with it to sound better solo that i think teases another song somewhere in there... wait for him to find this.
Film, HOW DID YOU KNOW?
LONG JAM:
(BTW, you dont have to do the hammer ons or pull offs, the chords themselves work fine)
(part one)
----------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------
--11h12p11-----9h11p9---7h9p7----4----6---------------
--12-------------11----------9----------5-----7---------------
--x---------------x-----------x----------x-----x---------------
--10-------------9-----------7----------3-----5----------------
(repeat as long as you want)
***********
(part 2)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------
--12h14p12----7h9p7-----6h7p6-----2-----4----------------------
--14-------------9-----------7----------4-----5-----------------------
---x--------------x----------x-----------x----x----------------------
--12-------------7-----------5----------2-----3------------------------
if you dont believe me that this can sound nice...
then ill do an audio clip. Or if your curious! ....
8)
EDIT: Further down, i have open chord versions that are easier and might even sound better.

OH! STUPID ME. I also have OPEN chords for the whole jam. (All before the 3rd fret) They are strummy strummy and very full. Let me type those out....
First Part:
x00323
x02230
x20230
320030
x02230
(repeat as much as you want)
Second part:
x00233
x20230

Thats the best i think. Its EXACTLY like the regular jam, but open chords. Do some davey moany scatty in that and your gold.
EDIT: ALso, these are VERY good if you finger pick em. I think there bootiful.

Do what I do. Do the song, then break down the jam like this:
then, after just a few times, switch right into WWBOM/PNP. Do those lyrics, do the PNP ending, then hit the end of LIOG. It sounds nice, doesn't it gumbo?
Code: Select all

A--5----4----2----x--x-- -7----2----0----x--x--------------------------
E-----------------3--5-- ----------------2--3--------------------------

Yes, I am in a box

I also like to use the little chords that are on the alt jam tab on the main site. But I pick them timmy style.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

when playing it solo, which is well what I always do anyways, I throw in some notes on the b string, when you speed up the rhythm it sounds nice, and when you slow down in the end you can do some picking (sorry that this doesnt line up right)
first part
10 x x 11 10 x
9 x x 9 10 x
7 x x 7 7 x
3 x x 4 3 x
5 x x 6 5 x
second part
12 x x 12 12 x
7 x x 7 7 x
5 x x 6 5 x
2 x x 2 3 x
3 x x 4 3 x
something to play around with.

no problem. use mine and rantings.. swap it up, each are good for certain things.. rantings are good for strumming, my open ones are good for picking and pretty and slow parts, and my other ones (in the tab) are good for hammers and pulloffs!onemoredrink wrote:Thank you so much, it all sounds great! I like gumbo's chords but i also like what ranting posted. Think i'm gonna fool around with it a little see what sounds best for me. You guys are amazing
WEE! mix em up.

build up pretty loud on the second part of dave's and then add this. i just added a little to the tim parts that are on the tabs for this site.
E:---------------
B:--7---5---3---3--5--
G:--7---6---4---4--6--
D:---------------
start by muting the high E then slowly introduce it during that part so it gets louder and crisper
then...
E:-----*9------7------5----3-------
B:--7--7---5--5---3--3----3---2---
G:--7--7---6--6---4--4----0---2---
D:---------------------------0---2-- then end on D and go back to the
A:---------------------------2------- first part of daves solo and do the
E:---------------------------3------- outro
*skip the 9 the first time time
there's a rythym to the high notes (i dont know if this will make sense but...)
on the 9 for example:
E:-99-x9-9990
it sounds great and its not too tough
