I would not mute that string in an attempt to make it easier because you are getting into bad habits. Only those two strings should be played and by working on playing only those strings, you are gaining muscle memory that will make you better and help you later. Just keep working at it and it will come.
I am about 6 months into this and I suggest working a few minutes a day (your hands will get tired fast0) on #34 and sattelite. They seem tough at first, but the rythme is really easy to grasp and the songs force you to work on stretching and moving up and down the the fret board. At first don't worry about hitting every note perfectly or at the correct pace, just focus on your strumming for a bit and then your fretting. Oh, and always do your best to alternate picking. I spent the first three months using only down strokes, but I am dumb and hopefully you are not!
