So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Good one, rolling eyes has to be the stupidest thing you could do.
And seriously, why create short cuts? It like learning the completely wrong way of doing something because it's easier... just do it right and it'll grow on you.

K, I hear what you're saying, but if you can do the same thing more simply isn't that the point? I mean, the guy
isn't Dave Matthews so what does it matter if he plays it exactly how Dave plays it, or a simplified version to get personal enjoyment out of it. Personally I think if you can find an easier way to accomplish some goal than you have found a
better way to accomplish said goal. Especially musically. You'll also be on your way to creating your own style rather than mimicing someone else's. Seems win/win to me.
That being said I'd like to see Shes22's tab of the song, and if it's easier, I'll play it that way, the rest of you long-fingered fuckers be damned!

My middle finger is 3" long. I'm short, fat, and stubby, the stretch just needs to be worked on, not something to be seen as impossible.

I don't think their is anything wrong with finding new ways to play a song, unless you are a Dave Matthews impersonator. Howie Day does an awesome version of 41 that is played differently thand Dave and it sounds pretty good. Also, I think it is nice for a beginner to be able to play a song to give them confidence and keep them going, even if it's not the right way to do it. Once they get better, they will probably try to learn it the right way. I did the same thing for #41, learned an easy way and once I got better learned how to play it the way dave does. It's easy for beginners to get frustrated and give up if they don't see they are progressing or enjoying it.

Someone mentioned on here to Practice the stretch by playing the nature intro over & over & over. That is how I learned. When my fingers were hurting I would just form that chord & hold it as long as I could. That will really help. Then work on the verse.

Exactly.
Personally, I can barely get the Billies stretch, and the resulting sound of the song doesn't give me as much pleasure as playing it a less stretchy way. I'm working on it, but in the mean time a simpler way to do it works better for me. I'm not saying that you shouldn't aspire to bigger better things (like playing Billies correctly, with the stretch), because you should, of course; but in the mean time do what gives you enjoyment.

Couldn't be put in a better way. You play guitar for your enjoyment so do whatever gives you joy.

Your confusing me here, your saying its stupid to roll the eyes but then you completely agreed with me at the same time.
This is a dmb site dedicated to playing dave's songs the way he plays them exactly. People get all pissy when someone(like me) points that out. I don't give a shit what ya'll do.

The second argument wasn't for you... It was for everyone trying to find an easier way to play it, I just don't know why you did the rolling eyes thing.

I agree, it's pretty easy, but I can understand if it's hurting a new kids finger, or perhaps they're just oddly short.
Stay with me, safe and ignorant.
