So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Drink water and WARM up prior to performing.
Stretch those vocal chords and sing from your diaphram.
So no fun is what you're saying?
Yeah man, i hate singing from my diaphram
the cigs are the only part I agree with you on. cigs are the antichrist.

Actually I think a combination of honey, lemon juice, and warm water will help. If you have the Lord of the Rings Extended Edition DVDs there's a part in one of the Appendices about Andy Sirkis' "Gollum Juice" that they made so he didn't lose his voice. He drank tons of it since he was doing that Gollum voice all day long for months on end.

And part 2:

I wouldn't try to sing like Dave ... My guitar teacher has commented that I'm doing a lot of Dave stuff lately and he doesn't want me to start being a clone and limiting myself to just Dave stuff ... because in the end, all I'd be able to do is play Dave's stuff ... poorly LOL

Take what you like about Dave's music and make it your own ... I think that if Dave came and sat down next to you and said, "Let me hear, oh, I dunno, 'Two Step' and you tried to play like he does he might be polite and listen. However if you started playing Two Step totally differently than he does, like with a Country Western slant to it, who knows, maybe he'd say, "Man, that was bad ass, I never thought of trying that before."

Point is, you can either be influenced by Dave or try to be Dave. In the end, by trying to be Dave you just cannot be true to yourself.

And that's my $.02 :)

Wish my technique was as bad as his ... cause I'd be a rich bitch with poor technique ... just like Dave :D

Dozens of forums are dedicated to his music ... must be something to having bad technique.
Just because he has bad technique doesn't mean he's a bad singer. He sings with a lot of passion which can compensate for other things.

Exactly. If you want to hear a singer with good technique check out Mraz. Sting also has amazing technique.
I don't think it's bad to emulate someones voice as long as your moving between different artists. Originality and style come from blending all of your influences together.
Although it is bad if your copying someone who's completely out of your range.

Dave's voice has changed over the years, from a younger, nasal voice that when you heard it you just knew he was stoned.

His voice has changed and his ear for singing has gotten much bettter. A bandmate once told me that when he was my age his range was much wider but his ear sucked and consequently he couldn't sing as well as he can today regardless of a limited range.

Dave is a great singer and songwriter, he's different and original - that makes a star!

I sing from my gut and when I do I feel like it's right.

Who's Dylan?

J/K

Dylan wanted to be Woody Guthrie, Springsteen wanted to be Dylan. It's not who is best, it is who is first that inspires all who come after.

agreed...must find your own tone and be comfortable with it...mimic'ing can cause injury or set you back...learn how to sing free with your own voice...originality is the key 8)

That's pretty much. Dave's voice fits his music, but why anyone would actually want it is well beyond me. It's a cool voice, but it's not a nice voice, and on bad days, let's face it, it's an awful voice.
