Grey St.?????

ok, this is a little of the subject discussed currently but from another post recently there was a discussion on why Dave plays Gray St. with 4 fingers instead of 2. Well, some people said it sounds bad to use 2 fingers and slide, where I actually prefer that sound. BUT, I always play GS on a 6 not a 12. I think I might have played it once ever on a 12. So maybe the slide sounds to messy on a 12 string and the 4 finger is just a crisper-cleaner sound Dave prefers? Maybe it still a matter of opinion...I dunno why this even matters really but i've already typed it out I suppose..

I used to play Grey Street with just 2 fingers when I learned it. When I learned Dave's way, I just found it more of a challenge. I like to do things that are harder rather than simpiler, just because I enjoy it and it's more fun. If you want to use 2 fingers, go right ahead, it's all your preference (maybe your fingers aren't long enough, like my mom's, in which the 2 is mos tlikely prefered).

when i first started learning grey st. a while ago, i used only my index and ring finger to play the intro/verse. i've recently started trying to play it "the way dave plays it" because i don't like the sliding sound too much. i practice a little each day, and playing with all four fingers is getting easier and easier.

I'm just starting to learn how to play and thought maybe I would try Grey Street. One thing I can't seem to get is the strumming pattern for this song (well not just this one, most). Would it be possible for someone to provide that?? As this is my first post and the fact that I'm relativly new here, I apologize if this type of request is not welcomed....

Thanks for the response. Probably should have mentioned that I'm starting with the verse. I figure once that is down, I can move on to the chorus. As for the audio clip, I didn't mean for you to go through all that trouble (though it would most likely be a great way to learn). I think all I need is when to use an upstroke vs a downstroke and how often on each chord?? This make sense??

I think an important thing to remember with all songs is to have it feel natural. I too learned Grey Street with 2 fingers then switched to 4, but I continue to play the chorus part of Granny with only 2 fingers. Just because Dave plays a song a certain way it doesn't mean everyone must carbon copy it. Develop your own style and you'll have a much easier time playing gigs and other potentially stressful situations.

you just want to consistantly strum with your right hand the whole time.
the A (5x06xx) is on an upstroke.

they are strumming it like that, just not for the intro. they take a few beats out for the intro, so it sounds like yours, but the timing and strumming pattern is still the same.
