Singing...? crap.
Singing...? crap.
Not a real specific question here, but i read another post that mentioned singing and remembered how mind-blowingly difficult it seemed at that time.
Anybody have any general advice as to how to sing along while playing, in case I ever get the courage to try it again? Granted, it was like two years ago and i could only play maybe 10 seconds of 3 different Dave songs, but still....it was traumatic.
Anyways, anybody got anything?
cool, thanks

Singing
I play the song through enough times until I can play it without thinking...
That gives my brain room to concentrate on singing...
So, I guess the answer is practice...

Don't be afraid to suck!
Seriously, there are precious few people who can sing and play well the first time they start. Take it slow, piece by piece, lyric by lyric and you'll have it down in no time. The first few songs are always the most difficult but soon you'll learn how to separate your attention between your voice and your hands and any song will be cake to learn.
Just don't be discouraged and keep at it...and just keep apologizing to anyone you live with. I did!

btw, when you guys say hum along, do you mean hum with the rythmn, or with the lyrics, because in some songs, Proudest Monkey being one, he has the rythmn going, but then he's starts out with "swiiiiiinnnnnnngggg--in this tree"...do i hum along with "swiiinngg" or with the rythmn?
Direct Your Phish Questions Here Please
I think the point of the humming suggestion was to learn the vocals part without concentrating much on the actual words...
The keys for me is:
1 - learn te guitar parts down so as mentioned above you don't need to think much about them
2 - learn the lyrics and vocals down too. My long commute makes for great singing practice time. Sing along with the CDs until the vocals themself are second nature.
3 - Practice putting them together once 1 and 2 above are mastered.
I've found that with practice and using the suggestions above, singing while playing is something that "clicks". Once it does every new song you learn seems easier. That's how it was for me, at least.

sing along?
My personal advise (this from an actual "singer"), is to NOT start off by singing along with Dave!
Seriously. It's self-esteem suicide. Try something basic first, where you've only gotta strum 3/4 chords: Dylan/Neil Young, etc. Anything more complex, and you'll be at it forever.
If you're hell-ben on doin' Dave, then don't play the whole thing at once....sing the song and only hit the transition chords, that kind of thing.
You've gotta work up to it. Lik Typical situation: the chorus is only four chords and well delineated. Try it.
If you can do that, you've taken your first step to not depressing youself thoroughly.

hum with "swiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing..." this will help train you to keep the rhythm of the riff which is easy, right? proudest monkey is tricky to sing with 'cause its hard to find where the words fall. ya know?Dancing Ants wrote:btw, when you guys say hum along, do you mean hum with the rythmn, or with the lyrics, because in some songs, Proudest Monkey being one, he has the rythmn going, but then he's starts out with "swiiiiiinnnnnnngggg--in this tree"...do i hum along with "swiiinngg" or with the rythmn?

dave is an extreemly experienced singer... so you should learn some dylan, its really easy and basic etc.
just remember that you didnt learn to play the guitar in a day, so dont expect to sing awsomely on your first try

i haven't really had too much trouble playing and singing at the same time. but the reason i think is cause the songs i've chosen to learn are songs that i've been totally in love with. when i decide to listen to an artist i have to get every song they've ever made, call it a complex, call it normal but i don't listen to an artist unless they stand for something i believe and agree with and then i listen to everything they've ever put out and if i love it then i put them in my favorite band file. i only listen to bands that i love. that's why i don't listen to a wide aray of music, mostly dave.
i could sing every dave song(aside from new albums) before i even started playing the guitar so in a sense i already know all the songs i choose to learn on the guitar cause i''ve already discovered what the song means through the lyrics. that's my answer.....still drunk and rambling(its 1:34am here in bend, or.) peace.
