Rare solo

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Rare solo

Unread post by fatjack » Mon Jul 07, 2003 8:57 pm

i just downloaded the the first dave show i went to the other day and i heard something i had completely forgotten about... a dave guitar solo! the show is May, 9th 2001. the song is two step and the solo starts at about seven minutes. its a long version of the song but the solo is pretty fun to listen to. got it at antmarching.org.

btw: carter also has a badass solo on that song.

I am downloading the song you are talking about right now. Antsmarching.org is running at a snails pace. It says it will take over an hour to get the song. Oh well, no hurry. Anyway, I was at the 8/2/02 show and was suprised to hear Dave doing a little solo. It was towards the end of Jimi Thing. They have it at ants, I think its the second song on disc 2. The solo starts at about 9:30 and goes past 11:00. It's simple single note stuff but sounds really good and was the only time I ever heard him do it. I'll know in a little while if it's like the one you heard but you should check it out anyway.

yeah, usually if he does a solo its on jimi thing...

listening to his solo makes me realize why he doesn't do it more often. its not that he's bad, he just doesn't stand out as a soloist. in fact, i realized that his solos sound a lot like the ones i play in my school's jazz band

Yeah, he's definitely not the best soloist. But I was so suprised to hear it at the time I thought it was the best solo I've ever heard. He was picking the strings really hard and the crowd was going crazy, me included. I was a little disappointed when I got the cd's a few weeks later because it didn't quite live up to the memory I had of it.

the solo on two step is similar in that he plucks the strings real hard, but i don't think anyone in the crowd noticed he was soloing

and your right... ants is going slow as hell right now...

You guys are aware of the many solo shows he has done, right? Just curious. I have about 5 solo shows on c.d but I think there are at least 20+ out there. He is great solo and listening to him solo really helped improve my playing moreso than full band.

no no no, you are misunderstanding. GUITAR SOLO. we're talking about when he plays a GUITAR SOLO with the rest of the band...

just listened to jimi thing on that show. it started out real cool and then he just started popping the strings real hard... and then he goes in to that short chord style solo. this solo was definitely better than the one on my show.

you mean "lead" right? I just listened to the one you first mentioned and it is kind of in the background, not as pronounced. I can see how the non-guitar playing crowd sort of missed it.

okay people lets have a quick grammar lesson

solo adj used when dave is playing alone

solo noun a guitar solo. i.e. lead. usually improvised and consisting of single notes.

so here's the difference: "Hey did you see dave play that solo show?"(adj)
"Hey did you hear dave play a solo?"(noun)

sorry just felt like being funny (i think the nyquil is kicking in). now lets not have any more confusion, hmmm

i love his leads. the simplicity is just wonderful, imo. its nice to have a break from everything flashy, and just have something laid back.

dave's solos fuckin rule IMO...its not they are fast, etc. but they just fit perfectly...Sometimes listening to a solo just sounds like a lot of "bla" if you know what I mean...Dave's not a solo guitarist...he's a rhythm guitarist, and definitely one of the best rhythm guitarists out there, if not the best...Solo guitarists do there thing, rhythm guitarists do there thing, and some dabble in both....dave def is awesome at what he wants to do...I'm sure if he focused on playing lead for a year, he would be a damn good lead guitarist too...but thats what tim is for. I couldnt play lead to save my life right now, but I know if I practiced it as much as I do rhythm, I could be just as good a lead guitarist as a rhythm guitarist...

basically I'd rather hear Dave jam to Jimi Thing than listen to Tim play(I went to a Tim concert a while ago...it was fast yea, but boring)
