How does he do it?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

How does he do it?

Unread post by Phan226 » Tue Dec 07, 2004 10:31 am

Any of you guys know the process Dave goes through when writing a song. I really suck at lyrics, and am looking for some ideas. If there is an interview with dave and how he writes that would be cool. Or just spit what u know from the grapevine. Also, how do you guys write songs? Thanks as always

I think some people have it and some don't. You can't learn how to write better lyrics per se...

sure ya can...you just practice writing...no writers start out as great writers, they just write a lot and just like anything, when you write more and more, you improve

keep at it

I blame my lack of writing skills on the fact that I don't do drugs.

I dont do drugs, but i can write pretty well...the problem is that I often have to simplify the lyrics b/c they're too poetic for a song...

lyrics is hard. I am reaally good at writing, but lyrics seem to be really different dimension. songs are different than poems. Its different than english creative writing or expositar(sp) writing. I dont know, i guess it will take practice. I cant still write good lyrics. try to tell a story. Try to notice things that not so obvious.

just pick up a pen and paper. Smoke a bowl, or do whatever makes you calm and grounded. Just start writing whatever. It can be what happened that day or a recent emotion, anything. Tranman hit the nail on the head, dont write about shit that everyone feels, but what you feel. happy jamming :)

dude, dave nailed it on the head during that (MTV or VH1) BTCS special. He was talking about how he writes lyrics and said something to the effect that when he finally writes something that doesn't make him cringe then he knows to keep that. That is soo me, only I never write anything that doesn't make me cringe and shudder.

I guess it would depend on what you called "good lyrics". I think I know what you mean though

it always seems that the best lyrics come to me while im trying to get to sleep. i dont write them down so i can never remember them the next day. when i sit down and think "ok im gonna write a song now" i start writing and i may be totally flowing, but then i look back over it and think "wow, what a load of totally trite shit" so dont try to force it
