Daves Knowledge and theory
I was wonderin how many of you know a lot of theory. also, does anybody know how much theory dave knows. does he make those jams up while hes goin along? also, how much theory should i know to communicate with other guitar players better and jam on the spot
Thanks.
Thanks.
I´m quite sure that there´s a lot of Timmy hands on Dave´s compositions...
And If you pay attention to the jams, the chords daves uses are almost all the same...
But he´s still better than any of us...

if you read the intro to the L@LC tab book he talks a little about theory and whatnot
Your right, he does use a lot of the same chords, it is all just part of his style. Theory comes more into play when you finalize a song, usually a writer just starts struming a chord and messes with it until it sounds right and then adds on. It's not like Dave sits around and goes ok I know a blues progression usually consists of a I IV V, so I have to do that. Theory is important if you want to know why and how things sound good, but music is still music you have to create it and find what sounds right to you.Dakial wrote:And If you pay attention to the jams, the chords daves uses are almost all the same...

Trust me I love Dave and his band, but I also try not to play it too often because then I lose my sense of style. We all have ours, some of us just find it sooner than others.
Looking to start a band, live in Naples Fl give a shout out if this sounds interesting or you want to just jam out.

Well lets just get this out of the way, The ENTIRE band that makes up DMB is EXTREMELY talented. But I have to disagree with you when you say Carter is responsible for most of the song writting. Dave writes most of the lyrics, which means he is probably also the one putting together the chord progressions as well, he is the one with the image of the song and how it should be from a guitarist point. After that Carter may step in and say alright did you think of adding this or maybe we should take this out. Just like Jay said, dave plays the songs first for Carter. Dave didn't start playing guitar yesterday, I am more than positive he knows how to put together an arrangement and also riffs. After that it is a creative process like in most bands where then it is tinkered with.grock wrote:carter is the most musically abled in the band. he is creditted with a lot of the arrangements on songs and putting the different riffs and rhythms of dave's together to make a song.
i'd say that most DMB song writing owe a lot more to Carter than tim or any other band members (well beside dave).
Now if we were talking about Staind, I would have to agree Mike is probably 90% responsible for the arrangements, while Arron is more of the Songwriter.
