Muting strings. Help!

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Muting strings. Help!

Unread post by jaspa » Thu Nov 28, 2002 6:30 am

I notice that sometimes when I'm playing Dave songs such as Crush, I need to mute strings with my ring finger. But for some reason or another I can't get my ring finger and my pinky to operate independently of each other. Like when I try to straighten my ring finger to mute a string (think the crush chorus) there is no possible way for me to do it. Are there any exercises I can do to fix this? Did you all start out not being able to do this? Help!
Could I have been dancing nancies?

Try to flatten out your ring finger while keeping your pinky arched, this should keep them apart frome ach other.

try using your index finger to mute everything. I just rotate it a little so that the side is just across all of the strings. if you need to mute the top string and your index is busy, just barely touch the tip of the finger closest to that string.

try to learn to use your index and ring finger to do this, although you should learn with them all these seem to be the most useful.
