where to start?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

I cannot stress enough the value of atleast a summer of lessons, but if you need to do it the hard way, I would pick out some songs that rely on chord structures and stay away from satalite or stone for right now. I would probably recommend some of dave's old stuff like Dancing Nancies or some other stuff from UTTAD. I actually started on crash and did just fine, but some other people seem to have trouble on it. Try out songs, see what you're limits are, and it never hurts to try to learn a hard song once in a while. Good luck

Search for "beginner songs" on these forums, up in between FAQ and Memberlist. Also, just listen to songs and pick ones that you like. Choose them, and practice, practice, practice.

First rule of guitar playing: Always practice.

Second rule of guitar playing: Always practice.

I've only been playing for a year and a half. I started with stuff like Crash because I liked the sound. Instead of worrying about difficulty, and if you can pick something up easily, just try persistence. It usually works.

Good luck!

wish I had known that :D I've been playing for two years and I am like 95 percent self taught. Having a music teacher for a dad helped a little too.

In terms of learning to play the guitar just start with some basic chords in terms of learning to play some dave stuff: The Song that Jane Likes (until the end thats pretty basic), Lie In Our Graves, Typical, Ants, and some other easy stuff.

dear mattahews: don't get jealous I'm just as self taught as you and my parents didn't buy me a guitar :P

Random movie quote to make you seem hip and "with it": I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.

yeh never taken a lesson, but I do plan to get some jazz electric lessons next year, or at least I hope so if I can pull together 300 bucks for them :? I really want to play electric guitar and jazz better though, and the guy who teaches it is really really really good.

i'm also self taught with a bit of help from dad... I agree with both everydaydmbfan's and bassmunkey's choices.. there all pretty basic songs to learn how to play.
