Sorry for the elementary questiosn....

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Sorry for the elementary questiosn....

Unread post by CWMCALL » Mon Jun 02, 2003 4:21 am

Hello everyone,

I have only been playing for about a week and I have what many will consider a dumb question...about the following tab for Christmas Song.

E:-----------------
B:--0---2---3---3-- <---1on1(2on3)
G:----------------- <---4
D:-----------------
A:------0---2---2-- <---1
E:--3-------------- <---3

When playing this do you not hit the G and D strings? Or do you just play them open? And if you don't hit the G and D strings how are you able to play the others while skipping the G and D and make it sound right?

Sorry about the elementary question...and thank you for your help.

What song is this from? The way I would play it would be to either mute the d and g strings or to play the open. Or if the song was fingerpicked you would use two fingers to play just those two strings. If its a song I know I can tell you how to play it for sure if not you should be able to listen along and figure out what sounds right.

My first post :D

Hmmm... I think you´re talking about the "chorus" part...
I play it like this...

Code: Select all

E:-x-----x-----x-----x-----
B:-x--0--x--2--x--3--x--3--
G:-x--0--x--2--x--4--x--4--
D:-x--0--x--2--x--4--x--4--
A:-x--x--x-----x--2--x--2--
E:-x--3--x-----x-----x-----
Yeah a lot of muting...

Oh, Finger picked then, just snatch up your pic under your index finger at the last knuckle and fingerpick the chorus with your thumb and middle finger. Thats how I play it and I believe Dave fingerpicks it too, at least some of the time at least.

Yeah, its finger style.

In addition, if you want the acoustic percussive feel, try slapping the strings in between when you sound the notes with your fingers. Get the notes down first, then learn the slapping rhythm. I love playing that chorus.

Oh yeah, deffinatley gotta get the slap going, I forgot about that. It is a must when playing the chorus. Do you have the chorus down yet and know what were talking about, cuz you should deffinatley be playing it that way.

I am just starting on the chorus...do mean "slapping the strings" with the fingers you are playing with?

Yeah, you just come down hard with your plucking hand on the strings at the soundhole. I come down with the fingers Im plucking with and the butt of my hand, mess around with it and get it to sound good. Its not that hard.
