#41, dreadful situation, review and help

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

My recommendation is to just keep practicing to help your hands stretch some more.

use your ring finger to hit the bass note on the 5th fret. your middle finger should be hitting the 3rd fret on the A string, and your index finger on the 2th fret on the D string.

Code: Select all

E:--------------------------------
B:---------------8---3--3----3----
G:---5-----7-----4---x--0h4--x----
D:---2-----4-----5---4--x----0h4--
A:---3-----5---7-7---5--5----5----
E:-5-5---7-7----------------------
  (3) (2) (2)

When I first started playing I didnt think I would ever reach it either. A year and a half later I have no problem reaching it. Just keep practicing and trying and your fingers will become more nimble over time, I promise.

Believe what Dustin is saying...it is the truth...you will get there with practice :)

I struggled with it too. It takes time to get it down. as they are not exactly easy beginner chords. My advice would be to spend some time trying to get that down but work on eaiser dave songs then work up to it. Good luck!

and its really more about setting your ring and pinky fingers and reaching back with your middle and index, try that out and if it works

hey man! i am/was having the same problem with #41. i can't reach the 5th fret with my ring finger yet, but i posted a while back with the same question to make sure i had the correct fingering and i wasn't trying to do it completely wrong. but here is the reply i got....

while practicing a lot eventually allows you to stretch to fingering such as #41, there is a way to play it without a note. it's not perfect, and it's not correct, and definitely you should keep trying for the stretch, but try playing it like this for now:

E:--------------------------------
B:----------------8---3--3----3----
G:---5-----7-----4---x--0h4--x----
D:---2-----4-----x---4--x----0h4--
A:---x-----x---7-7---5--5----5----
E:-5-5---7-7----------------------

like i said, it's not correct, but sounds fine to me. atleast until i can stretch like dave. give it a shot! good luck.

Dr. Stanley Levinson of UMASS, he can perform a procedure called "digit extendus".

It's expensive but he'll add at least 1 1/2 inches to your length. (on your finger of course)

If your looking for an easier way to play the intro you could always do this:

E---3---3----3----3
B---3---3----3----3
G---0---2----0----2
D---2---0--2-2-0-0
A-0-0-2-2----------
E--------------------

Yeah, I tried doing it the other way but for some reason it was kicking out some of the tab. So yeah, it is not how you normally view a tab. LOL
