Is John Mayer a better guitar player than Dave Matthews?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

I haven't posted before and I am a diehard davehead. But after reading all the posts on this topic, I am going to check out some of Mayer's stuff. I think this would be an interesting subject to debate in five years from now. But I can't really imagine John Mayer attaining a fan base of the magnitude or intensity of Dave's.

This site kicks so much ass!!

welcome :D

NOTE that I haven't said a word about this...I don't care if he is better...I like Dave more...and I don't find Dave as "god" either...he is deffinitely the best out of todays music, but there is much better from before his time...he is great, but I don't see it worth comparing the two...meh...my two cents...it was bound to come out sooner or later

Maybe you should make a new thread about that instead of confusing the people in here

Ive seen the John Mayer dvd and the Dave dvd. You all may be hardcore dave fans but if you think about it, John Mayer is way more skilled at guitar than dave. Yes, Dave definitly knows his chords but hes got a way better band behind him than John. If you've ever seen the tripping billies video of Carter Beauford in the studio, you would realize that when you've got that talent behind you, all you need is chords too make the song better. John Mayers infulence is Stevie Ray Vaughn so you can definetly bet that hes gonna be more skilled. Daves from South Africa so you know hes not gonna go bust out a 3 minute solo like John would. The question is really unfair. JM more skilled and plays to what style hes in. Dave plays to what style hes in. Its kinda like guitarists who visit this site only to play Dave. Thats all they know and like to play. And if they were to make their own music it would be really Dave influenced. If you were a big JM fan you would play his style of music and you would prolly be playing lead guitar and solos all the time. Thats all i gotta say PEACE

Ok ok. I'll end this puppy for ever.

Dave Matthews is a far better musician/guitarist or anything than John Mayer. Let us turn to the real evidence:
1. dave drinks
2. dave smokes
3. dave speak
4. 1+2+3=dave is fucked up

5. john mayer drinks...milk.
6. john mayer is a straight edge.
7. john mayer is normal.

ahh i do believe that all the best guitarists ever were fucked up like dave. or at LEAST did drugs or drank! seriously.
comon'..his favorite thing to drink..Vitamin D milk?

BOOYA.

haha Corona i like that.

ok after reading everything i hope i can organize my thoughts into coherent words....

music is a from of self expression...whether listening of playing....now with that said each person will form their own style based on past experiences...now what do we call this, personality. people are driven by this personality so the sort of style that most closely fits your personality is what your going to want to listen to/play. me myself was never a fan of SRV so im not a big fan of mayer. i tend to like bands that mesh better than a band driven by one person. just personal experiences.

i mean for all we know if a person who listens to punk comes on here they might say neither were better and that some punk guitarist was better....why they would say they i have no idea but u never know what will happen.

my point is depending on our personalities is who were going to think is a better guitarist. nuff said.

i hope this makes sense and if it doesnt just dont read it. haha
if i were giving advice to someone on how to fly.....

id probably say throw yourself at the ground..and miss.

There is no point of getting into this discussion now but I am for some reason. I dont really care about this whole post but most people who are commenting here are not realizing what this post is about. Who is a better guitarist? Regardless of which on you like more, which one drinks milk as opposed to beer (come on Corona) none of that matters. John is a better guitar player and most of us like Dave more anyways so whats it matter. It doesnt, someone just lock this thing up already, its going no where, Im sure this didnt help either because a few others have tried to point this fact out and we just keep ignoring it anyways.

Let's end this now

With all this discussion about who the better guitarist is I just wanted my first post to squash this whole deal. Let's face it, it doesn't matter who the better guitarist is because I am. In fact, I am the supreme being of all that is guitar. I would smash both of them in a duel. I love to sit here and laugh as I witness people arguing over talent that is so inferior to mine.
