There is definitely major slappage going on in Dave songs 8)

I don't want to sound "over-confident", but I feel as if I am close to Dave's sound. The slapping comes from just deadening the strings with the left hand, such as Minarets. The right hand palm muting is apparent in Say Goodbye, which I think has a combo of both. Once you get it, you're golden.

EDIT: This has to be the worst post ever..

Anyone else still confused by the whole slapping technique? I understand the raking, but I'm not real sure whats going on with the slap.

I think mbgreen's got it right

he uses both in combination. my suggestion..close your eyes, go by feel, and just make yourself get the sound to match that of the song.

its not as hard as you would think

i agree. i think all too often people want to be told how to play a song and have it explained to them but most of style is all about feel and not really "learning" in a traditional sense.

technicly its not slaping

because the real Slaping is Bass Slaping, and it is not possible at all to do it with a guitar cause of the strings are smaller

but I still know what you mean, usualy it is easier to get that sound when you do a Harmonics and hit with your full thumb .

uh oh. watch out my man. tim reynolds and many other guitar players regularly play with a slap style. i can do it for a number of songs. i saw a guy here in chicago that was doing the slaps and pops and everything. it was crazy good.

in reference to the debate over whether dave slaps-right or mutes-left, i do recall him saying (rough quote), "i slap so damn much. i've got a little boop. not boob. boop". (Live at Luther???)

anyways, i think it's clear that he does indeed slap (his guitar, not his boob)

He says, "I slouch so badly, it emphasizes the fact that I've got a little boop." He's talking about his stomach. Just for clarification.

ahhh, good call green. i couldn't tell what he was saying. regardless, i think dave uses about every kind of mute possible, at different times: muting unplayed strings with his left hand, sometimes muting all strings with his left to scrape, and regualarly muting with some portion of his right hand while strumming. it's the sort of lazy playing technique one develops while half-heartedly playing and watching tv or something. except, with dave, he's damn good at it so it sounds good. if you're not good at it, it doesn't sounds right.

anyways, he is indeed a master of muting, that much is for sue.
