Two Step Strum Pattern

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Unread post by Mia » Tue May 20, 2003 2:26 pm

I've just started learning Two Step, but I can't seem to get the strum pattern right. Any advice?

That's one of the toughest strum patterns...right up there with Stay and Warehouse. Do a search for this topic.

for two step just listen to an acoustic version over and over.. yes it varies from performances but play along and you'll get down Dave's unimaginable rhythm

Yeah, get and acoustic version, and listen for the changes. Over and over and over. Till you want to learn a new song. Then learn a new song. Then go play Two Step.

If at first you don't succeed, try again. Then give up. There's no use being a damn fool about it.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing....but I think I'll just keep those Two Step tabs in the closet for the moment, I can hardly play LIOG and Crash....hehe..

The easy part about two step is how straight forward it is. Theres no syncopation the emphasis is consistanly on the beats. Just get that pulse going it will eventually come to you.

Yeah, I still can't play Stay or Warehouse. I just can't get the rhythm going in Warehouse.

the best thing to do to find the pattern is just to listen to it and play it out

Rest your hand on the bridge..

are you palm muting or just resting on the bridge?
i would assume that palm muting IS resting on the bridge...but if you rest farther back you dont mute..so which is it?

Here is my post from a past thread

Code: Select all

Newer Intro
E:----------------
B:----------------
G:-10-------------
D:-x--------------
A:-8--------------
E:-10-------------
   d u D u d u D u d u D u d u D ....and so on

d = light downstroke
u = light upstroke
D = emphasized downstroke
Muting is a VERY important part of this song (right hand). I mute all strums except for the "emphasized downstroke".

The man of the hour is "the man of the hour"....he is dead on with the strumming pattern...your hand should almost bounce to the beat....yes...it is still considered a palm mute....however, placing your hand on the bridge allows you to get more of the note, without the sustain, and makes the "click" sound come through....

I have to agree. Yeah, it's like a one-e AND a feel to it, the uppercase being the emphasis. If you're gonna play acoustic, basically use Carter's snare pattern, which is the same as what I just said, or listen at the beginning of Two Step on Crash...that's the acoustic feel. As for full band, well, I haven't tried yet...we're not at that stage. Good luck.
