Typical Situation Question (more about muting technique)....

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Typical Situation Question (more about muting technique)....

Unread post by myonlybliss » Tue Sep 28, 2004 1:45 pm

Ok---Typical Situation (Live at Luther College version).

He is doing some very cool funky percussive stuff in this song---particularly in the chorus and going into it.

Here is just one example... In the first chorus it starts at
"welllll every body's happy..."
chick/chord between every and body's

What is he doing here in this part and all during the chorus---it is percussive yet doesn't sound like a string muting chick you hear in Nancies (for example), because I think I am hearing the chord along with the percussive chick. Anyone know how he is doing this????
Listen to the song again and you can hear it.

Thanks

no--- my guess is that it's either some sort of percussive chord OR he is doing a string mute "chick" very quickly??????????????

listen to it again and you can definitely hear it
it's all in the 2nd chorus also

I'm pretty sure its a MEGA fast finger mute. I've managed to reproduce it a few times with Typical Situation and I can do it pretty decently with Nancies. I think mostly it has to do with your strumming.

I also think he does the same thing in the D&T version of What Would You Say.

i think the part that your talking about is just string slaps. just use your picking hand to hit the strings. i like to do it closer to the fret board so you can hear the strings hit the frets.

What dave is doing is just muting the strings though. He rarley mutes the strings with his pick hand

anyone figured out what he is doing????

I'm pretty sure he mutes the strings with fretting hand but does this percussive mute occur on a downstroke or an upstroke because the chord is struck very very quickly after the mute???????

i think hes using his right hand. if you strum loosly with your wrist , your able to mute and strum at the same time with the palm close to the thumb side. liog would be an example of fret muting, but i've thought that most others are with the right hand.

He doesnt use his right hand. Its all in his Fretting hand. He just mutes the strings with his left hand and does a ujpstroke.

pcik, but he doesnt fingerpick that song. He rarley use his right hand to mute anything. More then majority is done with his fretting hand.

i use my right hand all the time to hit the strings. and you can clearly hear that the strings are hitting the frets. they aren't being muted.

Yes...they are being muted. Second, we arent talking about how you play, we are talking about the way Dave plays. Its a quick mute on an upstroke. This isnt that difficult to figure out.
