Simple Stone Question

Unread post by crush40 » Thu May 08, 2003 3:31 pm

Hey...I've only been playing for about a year and a half. When I was learning the stone, I couldn't help but wonder why you'd hit the 5th fret A string when the open D string is the same note, and in my opinion, easier to hit. Now, I don't exactly play that song smoothly, but still...why reach with the pinky when you can just play it open? Just a question...interested to hear your thoughts...

The best reason is so to keep the fingers moving in a constant pattern. Many people have talked about playing it that way, but I find it difficult. Also, keeping that pinky there can help to mute the higher strings. But keeping all the fingers active is my main reason.
I can't believe that we would lie in our graves wondering if we had spent our living days well, and I can't believe that we would lie in our graves dreaming of things that we might have been...

I think it's all about finger dexterity.

if you just pick an open string, its gonna continue to ring out unless you put a finger on it to mute anyways... you gotta put that finger down one way or the other and muting an open string after you hit it doesnt sound nearly as clean as picking a fretted string, then pulling off

Random movie quote to make you seem hip and "with it": I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.

tone, tone, tone.....
using your pinky allows you to control the softness and length of the note.....try this: hit the same note at different frets throughout the neck....different positions give different vibrations....the note might be the same, but the "feel" is different....this doesn't make a hell of lot of difference on an electric, but it is crucial for an acoustic....plus it doesn't hurt to start building a decent stretch (you'll need that for billies! ) and don't we all want to play like dave?
Good luck man.....

absolutely right. Dave plays many songs without playing any open notes at all. examples: Satellite, One Sweet World, The Stone, Rhyme and Reason, many many more. its a part of his percussive style. I love it.
good, and you?

If you look at the first three notes they're based on a popular minor chord pattern (d minor in this case) that you can play with the root anywhere on the sixth or fifth string. Dave may have been playing around on that chord when he came up with the song? I dont know.
