Type of Pick?

just wondering if you had any suggestions on what type of pick a beginner should be learning dave songs with? i find that using a "thin" pick makes it easier to create percussive sounds. what does everybody else use, and what advice would you have for me? i have been playing for about 6 months, but feel i am somewhat decent (i.e. i can "play" a few dave songs)...

i have been playing for about a year and a half and now only play with Martin thin picks.

I use the dunlop blue picks, I think they are 1.0. I like them thick so I can pic more precisley and the dunlops have that powder type stuff on them that gives good grip.

control is the most important thing to me

wow, that's thick...i think the thick ones are probably good for picking (soloing) and thins are good for strumming. mediums i guess can be good for both. it depends on the style

Ever since i tested out Nylon picks I won't use ANYTHING else...love em. Just seems like they have much less of an "attack" on the strings which allows the notes to shine through, atleast IMO. Anyways..I'm a thin user... .46 for me

Nylon picks for strumming, you can't go wrong...i agree with johnny b goode, cause well, jonny b right....however, for songs like the stone, i like to use a pearloid pick, it has a very bright sound.....dont underestimate using your fingers either....keep on playing man....you can't go wrong with a guitar in your hand, no matter what pick you use....

thanks guys! ill keep on chugging along with my thin Fender pick. ill give the martins, dunlops, etc. a try when i get back home this summer and around a decent guitar shop...

I like dunlop tortex (the kind with the turtle). I usually use .60 (orange) for acoustic and .73 (yellow) for electric.

i never know there was so many different kind of picks... usually i just buy the cheapest mediums i can find

fender makes terrible picks. i have broken them before. and that was just strumming like normal. i wasn't even geting into it. i use the dunlup tortex red ones (maybe .46 i think) for most everything. but if i have a song where there is just a crazy flurry of fast strumming (kinda ethnic percussive stuff. maybe like rusted root) then i use the dunlop nylon whites. they are pretty darn thin. and the nylon greys are like .5 and they work great for everything too. i like those for straight picking songs when there is not much strumming.

i also punch a hole in my picks with a normal hole punch and it makes them so much easier to grip. if you do it closer to the fat end of the pick, it doesn't affect the strength of it or anything. haven't dropped one since i bought the punch.

A couple years ago I went to the guitar shop and bought 1 of almost every pick they had. There must 50 of them. A few of them I liked but now I only play the Dunlop Tortex 1.0 or the next one down. I think it's a .88. They have a great full sound, not that slappy nylon sound. They last long and stay in my hand even when things get heated up.

I should be on a Tortex infomercial.

I agree for the most part; especially those tortoise shell colored picks. However, Fender does make a pick that's extremely similar to Tortex's.

They come in all the same thicknesses and colors as Tortex's but I've only seen them in a music store once.

I like carbon-fiber picks too
