Ants Strumming Question- Storytellers

Unread post by ElGuitarrista » Wed Apr 30, 2003 6:09 pm

Hey folks,

When I hear people play Ants (including myself), they never seem to get the same percussive effect that Dave gets.

I've been watching the Storytellers video. It looks like Dave hits the main D and G chords on a upstroke. Watch the start of the song... he starts on an upstroke. Did anyone pick up on this?

I've tried to play the song by hitting the D and G on an upstroke, but can't seem to put the strumming pattern together.

Anyone else notice this?

-Eddy

i know what you are talking about, but he hits them on a downstroke. you cant go by the video from that show. the audio is not in line with the last part of the video (starting with the cave cricket story). watch him talk during that story and it is very obvious. the way to tell the most i think is when tim is doing his slide solo. watch his hand with the slide on it go up the fret board, the notes dont match up with when he moves the slide.

i didnt really answer your question. all the notes and strums on that part of the song are downstrokes.

This has been brought up before (The "it looks like he plays it different in the storytellers vid" thing.) Basically, the audio in that vid is just slightly out of sync with the video, so it looks like Dave is doing some weird shit. Its not the best video to watch for learning to play ants. He does play it with downstrokes. All the slaps and percussive hits will come with practice...thats really all there is to it.
