Typical Situation picking

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Typical Situation picking

Unread post by bakemm » Tue Feb 24, 2004 2:15 pm

I just don't know if I am doing it correctly. I "Down pick" each string, but this makes it so I cant tap my foot to the beat.

I have been using :
E:--------------------- E:---------------------
B:--------------------- B:---------------------
G:--------------------- G:---------------------
D:----9-9------9------9-- x2 D:----9-9-----9------9-- x2
A:---------10-----10----- A:-------10-----10-----
E:-0------------------- E:-8-------------------

Do you guys always down pick, or are there uppicks also? Which ones? Thanks, and please excuse my ignorance.

yeah, i use alternate picking. btw, the stretching makes it a little difficult (as with most DMB songs), but try adding the harmonics as suggested by this site. damn it sounds cool. a guy did a typical situation tease at one of the open mic nights and he used the harmonics. pretty shibby!

have those harmonics always been on that tab? i learned that song forever ago and i started using the harmonics after i heard an old dave solo show where he used them a lot, it sounds cool but its hard to make it clean while still keeping the rhythm in its entirety

Its not really picked. Its strummed. Tiny strums, but strummed.

yea i definitely keep a continuous strumming motion going the whole time, just hitting the individual notes as i go by... it keeps the harmonics in time and makes a smooth transition into the chorus

I always finger picked it and it sounded fine. Softer, too. I'd advise that if you're playing solo, gives it a nice, soft feel.

I don't have any trouble singing/playing a variety of somewhat difficult Dave songs, but I STILL cannot do Typical Situation. I can't tap my foot to the song, nor can I sing to it.

I am doing tiny strums (quasi-picking strums). Do you guys all do DDUDDDD for Typical? Thanks.

I strum it for the most part slternating from the A and the D/G. You can hear Dave do it sometimes. I jsut prefer to do it all the time.

I have seen it picked and strummed by dave. One time the song is fully strum, and then I saw another one where it was clearly picked and not strummed (I am talking about only the verse . . . which I played at open mic earlier tonight ;) )
