Hey
I was kinda screwing with you to get some entertainment value as I sat at my desk rotting away in work. I must say that I thought you sounded like you were bragging and/or look for some sort of pat on the back, but that's cool I think we all enjoy that when we feel we have accomplished something. Anyways keep up the practice. I just begun playing and though I love DMB to death I like mixing in other songs just for entertainment value and to see how other bands put together their music.
As far as dave songs, well I am looking for any and all suggestions to improve playing. I have bits and pieces of a number of songs down but I feel like I am not progressing the way I'd hoped. What were some of the earlier dave songs that you guys learned, meaning what songs are easier then others.
Does anyone have any suggestions for improving my fretting and picking using some sort of training procedure. Is still find myself having to look to find frets now and then and also missing a string.
Shawn thanks for your advide a few pages back, good Stuff. GO SOX!

Yeah, for some reason, I was satisfied with my Satellite, then I listened to it like three more times, it really isn't all that great. When I played it for my friends, it went so smoothly, I wish I recorded that...
Question about Warehouse... I keep ringing the E & A strings when I go for the 7 X
Any suggestions?

I just now read this thread...only because I was curious as to what 8 pages could be in a newbie thread. Interesting read, very interesting.
Now, my .02:
You sound good man, a tad bit shakey like you are trying to rush into the next note. But over all, for what you say your guitar experience is, not to shabby. Keep it up.

If it weren't for that, I don't know what i'd do.Snyder wrote:I just now read this thread...only because I was curious as to what 8 pages could be in a newbie thread. Interesting read, very interesting.

Re: Hey
Crash is a great first one to REALLY work on when you have the skills to be able to play a song from beginning to end. It has a fun walking bass groove, while you basically hang out on the chord fragment.tommymal wrote:As far as dave songs, well I am looking for any and all suggestions to improve playing. Start out by intently watching your fretting hand and go through the fingering positions in as close to half time as you can...even though you are slowing down the tempo, try and keep the rhythm of the song constant. It is very important to begin to 'feel' the rhythm of a song. That way if you get lost or make a mistake, you feel comfortable at hopping back on anywhere in the song. Once you can go through the fretting positions with ease and without mistakes, bring it up to tempo, still without the strumming. Pretty soon the motions will be 'locked in' and you'll no longer have to watch the fretboard. Another important thing is to make sure that your fretting hand is in the easiest position for all of the changes you are making. It can be the difference between learning a song with ease and being completely stuck. That's the beauty of this site and the vids, Kanter does a great job of getting these right. Asking for a b+p in the trading depot to get some Dave+Tim dvd's also helps IMMENSELY!
Next, once you have that down, mute all of the strings with your fretting hand and just strum the rhythm to get the wrist/arm/hand motion down. Strum all of the muted strings until your wrist and hand get used to the motion of the song. It sounds silly, but this approach really works. Once you independently have the fingering and the rhythm down, begin to bring them together.
Start off playing the tune at half time. Go slow. It's better to learn it the right way the first time around, trust me! Beginners have a tendancy to speed up as they make mistakes and then everything begins to get worse and things fall apart. That’s why playing with a metronome or the album is so helpful.
Once you get it down, just practice the song at least once a day all the way through with the album and you should be set to work on it solo. Without the timing crutch of the album, it can be a little tough, but that’s where ‘feeling’ the rhythm of the tune comes into play. You can use this approach on pretty much any tough tune out there. It’s always better to go slow and learn it correctly.
The awesome feeling you get when you can play a TOUGH song all of the way through for other people with no mistakes and in time makes it all worth it. Learning assorted riffs is one thing but learning SONGS is something completely different and much better. I went through the same thing when I was starting out. The transition from a measure or two of riffs to whole songs is very tough but so worth it. Good luck!
Yeah, I appreciate you going through the effort of teaching me.
The way I've been teaching myself is by just learning the riffs and transitions and then putting it together while playing the song like you said. I think my early fishing days taught me patience which carried over to my guitar playing. I can seriously sit down and play a song through 4-5 times until I feel it sounds good.
Thanks again though!

thanks....
shawn, great advice. I can't wait until I am able to get whole songs down. That's when the chicks really start banging down the door ha ha
Re: thanks....
Sometimes that's the only thought that will get you through playing the same song for the 50th time in a row to get it 'just right'tommymal wrote:shawn, great advice. I can't wait until I am able to get whole songs down. That's when the chicks really start banging down the door ha ha
