im in the mood to explain stuff, so i will even if no one asked specifically

the numbers in time sigs each have their own purpose, as stated above, the top number is the amount of beats per measure

the bottom number is a different story. it signifies which type of note receives a full beat.

for example: in 4/4, there are four beats in a measure. the bottom number lets you know that quarter notes get the beat. thusly, there can only be four quarter notes in one measure of 4/4.

now lets take a time sig like 6/8. there are six beats in a measure, but the note that receives the beat is an eighth note. so there can be up to 6 eighth notes, but only 3 quarter notes.

now compare 6/8 to 6/4. they both have six beats in a measure, but each one has a different maximum of eighth notes and quarter notes because the number in the bottom is different

i hope that wasn't too confusing

I am also trying to figure this out with no prior music experience.... Is Pay For What You Get in 5/4, or am I way off...

I don't think its in 5/4, it just doesn't have the same feel, and I';m too drunk to count it out right now.
