WHAT ARE THE KEYS TO PLAYING LIKE DAVE?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

WHAT ARE THE KEYS TO PLAYING LIKE DAVE?

Unread post by TOMAMI » Fri Apr 04, 2003 5:10 pm

I play guitar and yes like most of you I am addicted to dmb. I have tryed to play a few songs of his in the past year and found it to be very difficult
to say the least. I have noticed a lot of muting and strumming of single notes and a few finger cramping stretches. Has anyone noticed that when you go to play other song that aren't dave related you get them much faster. My question is what would you say is the key or the keys to learning dave's style.

First of all, that quote is scary, second, it takes lots of practice, learning his chords, learning how to mute and go from strumming to picking quickly, etc. People on the boards here are a lot of help also. Start with an easier song and work your way up, you'll get there eventually. I started playing Dave two Christmas' ago and I can play the majority of his stuff now. Just pick a good song, stick with it and come here for help. Also, welcome to the boards.

Not that I do, so I cant really answer this question, but the keys to playing like dave are practice, practice, practice, AND

MUTING. Pay special attention to muting. Just cause you can play the notes and have the rythm down doesnt mean you're anywhere close to being able to play the song yet. It seems like the better I get, the more I realize I suck, if that makes any sense.

What are you talking about man, I listened to your Stone cover and it sounded pretty damn good. What exactly can't you get right if you think you suck? Just wondering cuz you seem a little down on yourself and I thought you were pretty good.

well thanks for the compliment - I appreciate it. Im just saying that its not hard to play dave's songs, but to get dave's style down is tough. I can play his stuff, but I've got a ways to go in terms of getting the percussive sound down. But yeah. Thats all I mean.

if youre a guitarist you need to say you suck. it motivates you to learn more. :)

this is true. it seems the best guitarist focus more on what they can't do, or don't know rather than what they can do or what they know. you gotta keep raisin' the bar if you wanna get better.
good, and you?

A musician is never satisfied..otherwise whats the point?

The good thing about playing Dave is that he typically uses the same chord structures for most of his earlier songs.

For example Satellite, # 34, Warehouse all use the same fingering patterns.(for the most part)

Grey Street, Tripping Billies, When the world ends..etc. also use the same chord structures.

I would suggest learning 1 of each song in the above mentioned examples. Pick one that comes easiest to you and perfect it. Once you do that - move on to a new song with the same chord structure and see how easy it is now.

I also used to place my hands in the proper positions and held them for a few minutes without playing. It helped stretch my hands out on those crazy chords. Anyway I hope that helped a little.
