I still can't do the split for "Trippin Billies" like Dave does but when I started I couldn't even get my fingers to spread from 2 - 6. Now at least I can do it and it actually sounds like something
What I would do is instead of playing the whole song is play a verse of Crash, then a verse of Satellite, and then a verse of another Dave song like Ants ... and then back again ... that gives your wrist tendons and fingers a chance to relax for a bit and not cramp up ...

Practice hard but not too hard! When it starts hurting, you should push it too much - you can get serious injuries because of that! The trick for those stretchy fingerings is looking for a more comfortable position. If you raise the arm of the guitar a little bit, you'll find it takes a lot less tension in your fingers to do those chords - That's why classical guitar players have that weird posture when playing.
