endurance in crash and satellite - my hand craps out

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

endurance in crash and satellite - my hand craps out

Unread post by jared » Sun Jun 27, 2004 1:31 pm

I'm fairly new to the guitar - about 7 months, and i've been practicing about 3+ hours a day since i got it...

I can accurately and cleanly play crash and satellite - all parts of each song.. but my hand craps out too early

Like in crash i can only get about 2 minutes into the song before my hand feels like concrete and i can barely move my fingers. I push myself harder and harder each day to get further into each song, but sooner or later it just dies on me in the middle of the song

Is there a technique you guys use to build endurance in hand-tiring songs like crash and satellite? Any advice would rock. I do finger stretches, and warm up before i practice - and that helps a lot - but my sooner or later my fretting hand just craps out :(

On the tab Kanter has up on the main site, he shows you how to play Crash Into Me when you're hands start to cramp. It happens to Dave Matthews when he plays that songs actually, so he changes, makes a little adjustment to keep his hands from hurting. Just look for it in tab that he has on the site. That should hopefully get you all straightened out ;-)

Plenty of practice is the only thing that's gonna help you out. Well, mixed with a steady amount of masterbation
Good luck!

i thought i was pretty good because i could finally make it all the way through satellite or crash without stopping...

but then i tried playing along with 'Live at Luther College' where crash immediatley follows satellite.... :(

geez i thought my hands were about to fall off.

have any of you guys run into this? being able to play a lot of dave's songs but not all together? i have no idea how he does it :(

Yeah, just like doing any sort of sport, you will flex and get more agility the more you play. Your fingers will eventualy be fine for most of the stretching, just give them time.

Also, yeah, if all else fails, do the simple versions that is talked about here.

When my hands puss out on Crash, I just take my pinky off of the B. It doesn't sound the same, but it's still the same notes as the original E chord. It also sounds fuller. Then I put my middle finger on the E (on the D string) and pinky on the B (G string, fourth fret) and play the riff with the two remaining fingers, and just let the high E and B strings ring for the drone. Helps when playing Tim's part solo, too.

As far as Satellite, I've never had any problems with that song.
Stay with me, safe and ignorant.

if you go to winglets site (http://www.geocities.com/ericwormann) theres a section of songs quotes. in the satellite tab he mentions that satellite was born from finger exercises he used to practice. he said orginally it sounded horrible because he was just praticing the three fret stretch. but then he started messin around with that scale and satellite was created.

ive also heard, as im sure most of you have, that daves had acute cases of carpal tunnel because of the ridiculous fingerings and stretches he uses in some of his songs. thats why in some videos youll see him readjust the chord part way through crash to relax his hands a bit. thats also why most tabs have a couple ways of playing it. also, youll see dave shake and stretch his left hand after a song because they start to ache a lot. i think he does this at the end of smts on the central park dvd.

the moral of the story, i guess, is exactly what everyone else has said: practice and your hands will become more atuned the to the partterns and shapes of the chords. but regardless, they will start to ache a little just due to the the awkward position youre putting hand into. in time, youll just grow accustomed to the aches and pains and play through it.

thought id just give a little more explanation. :)
