Raised B tuning procedure? can't access FAQ

Unread post by barneco2000 » Mon Jun 21, 2004 6:01 pm

Anyone mind spelling out the procedure explaining how to achieve the Raised B tuning that's outlined in the FAQ. Been trying to get to the FAQ for a while now and it seems to be down.

Thanks!

Well, I don't know if it's still down or not, too lazy to look, but I'm not too lazy to give this long explanation if you haven't got it figured out ;-) Buy a pack of Medium strings, I believe, and throw away the Low E, you won't need it. Then you take the A string and put it in the Low E position, the D string in the A string position and so on. Now after you've done this, you will see that you won't have anything in the High E string position. You'll need to buy another B string, .016 gauge I believe, to put in that slot. Now after you have all those in, you tune it accordingly. And viohla! Raised B tuning :-)

2StepGranny is mostly right, but don't buy Mediums. If I remember correctly, you get a set of Extra Lights, and then the extra B string (.16). Move each string to the different location and tune like normal. The extra string goes where your normal little-E would go, and it's thicker, but that's how Dave plays it.

Sweet, thanks fellas.

"Tune like normal" - I'm assuming this means tune the bottom string up to B and the rest using normal tuning intervals, right?

you should be able to do it w/ a set of light 12-strings...and also, I wouldn't recommend it...it's not necessarily good for the neck of your guitar to alter the tension in such a manner w/out having it properly set up. Considering what it could do to your guitar, I just don't think it's worth it to play a few Dave tunes...

I agree totally, and wouldn't even really consider doing it if I only had one guitar, or on a nice guitar. However, I recently got a new taylor, so my old, sorry Alvarez beater has been just sitting around in the case. The thought occurred to me the other day that I could use it for permanent alternate tunings...and the raised B came to mind. Neither of my guitars are cutaway, so the 7 fret capo scheme has always presented problems enough for me to not even mess with it. Restringing the beater would be an ideal solution.

Anyway, thanks for the sound advice, no pun intended.

I may be wrong, but I think raised B puts less strain on the neck compared to standard E, so I wouldn't think it's bad for the guitar.
