Raven: Benaroya Hall

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

No Timmy there, it's a solo show.

As for Clare's question, I can't tell ya because Im a pretty poor guitar player/musician.

It's pretty much the same, his transitions back into the verse are different but the main parts are correct, that's the one I used...I can look at the tab and explain where it's diff. if you wish....this one had me going for a while in the beginning....

i never bothered to learn raven before so i picked up the guitar, fired up the 2002-10-24 show and tried to learn the song going off what he polays and what the tab says.

i'm gathering that when you say the song doesn't sound right, youre talking about chord shapes and such? the verse hes playing sounds dead on to me, save for not sliding up to the a on the 7th fret on the d string in the verse riff. (he does occasionally but not always)

the prechorus (breakdown) i'm iffy on... i think i just need to practice my rhythm/emphasis more but it seems like its gonna work.

the chorus sounds just like bits and pieces of recently intro... cause the chords are pretty similar.

i dont really think hes playing anything "different" from whats in the tab... aside from transitions and stuff but thats all improv anyway.... what exactly don't you feel right with?

on an aside, what kind of source are you listening to? i have the show on shn so the quality is damn near perfect.

and oh yeah... thanks for the inspiration to learn a song i always wanted to but never got around to doing.

The ONLY difference between my tab and the tab from Benoyara is the "Breakdown" part. I think my tab may actually be wrong so I need to change it. The difference is that the LAST chord in that part is really only a 7onE(low E, 7th fret). Other than that the song is EXACTLY the same as played with the band. I will have it soon, but a video confirmation from Benoyara will be available(AND TREE'D, RUN THROUGH DMBTABS.COM). Anyway, that might help with strumming although for the Chorus part he usually just hits each chord once(from memory, don't have it near me now). Anway, gotta go hit the town in Rome.....peace

Thanks a lot guys for explaining :)

It sounded different to me as of the rhythm and stuff but I've figured it out - when I was playin Raven on my old 'bang-around-guitar' it didn't sound right...but I tried it on a few other my other guitars and it does.
I guess my 'bang-around-one' (my first guitar ever) needs hoying in the waste bin

When playing along with the Benaryna verion I noticed Dave does something strange in the verse after the first 3 chords, just um I don't know how to explain it, its like a lil switch of is fingers creates this different sound maybe its just a slide. Anyways I've wrote 'HERE' below where I think it is. Can anyone confirm this for me...or is it just in my head?

Code: Select all

Verse
E:-------------3-----------------------
B:----12-------3---------10---H---12---
G:----11-------0---------9----E---11---
D:----9--------0----/7---7----R---9----
A:-11-11-------2-------0-0----E---11-11
E:-----------3-3-----------------------

Yeah, the only video I have of Raven REALLY looks like he hit the 7 on the B but it's hard to tell. It is also kinda hard because you can't hear that part w/ the entire band playing really. I guess the Benoyara confirmed it....I will make a note to change it when I get back...peace all

Throwing out a guitar just seems wrong. Restring it, and if it still sounds bad then tuck it away for the sake of keeping it. Then one day when you make millions you can have it put out it on display.

I'm not hearing anything different there.... just hitting the strings differently with your strummin hand I think. Its all about that crazy South African rhythm.

I could be wrong, though, but I'm not hearing anything new in there.
