Dave's gettin' soft

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

My fav is amen omen.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

On Dave Matthews Driven from VH1 said that he took lessons as a little kid. I believe it was when he still lived in South Africa but I'll have to check on that last part. Other than that I don't know of any others. But I doubt he wrote enough stuff while he was learning from him so I don't know how he could sue him. wouldn't that suck if every famous guitar player was sued by their guitar teacher.

Lessons or no lessons, it doesn't really matter unless we get into the qualifications of the people teaching him. When I first started playing I took lessons for about a month. My teacher could play the guitar like a Mofo but he couldn't read music, he wasn't organized and he quite frankly couldn't teach.

If Dave had lessons it could have been from some hack like the guy I took mine from.

I liked the concept of loving wings, how it was just a little jam that every member of the band would contribute to, so that the song grew little by little. Reminded me alot of Proudest Monkey. Still I when I went to see Dave live in 2002, no one knew what was going on. Everyone was like, "What the hell is this?" A lot of people sat down. It just felt like the song took too long to get started and never built up enough energy. Also the riff is very repetitive and after 7 mins. actually got on my nerves a little. It just killed the mood of the show.

If anyone still doubts Dave's ability to write creative riffs, check out the most recently written song on an official DMB album. You Never Know.

good call on YNK, great riffs in there
also another one i like playing, and is pretty creative i think is the everyday breakdown, simple - somewhat, dave chords- yup, fun to play - hell yeah

EDIT just thought of another recent song with a great riff or two - JTR

I agree with his stuff becoming simpler. That seems to happen to all artists/musicians. They seem to have a "creative period" that is generally brief and explosive. If you look at any band, they almost always have an album or two that was their defining sound. I am predicting that DMB's new stuff will sound very similar to Busted Stuff and/or Some Devil. The songs will be more mellow, less complex, less energetic, and more introspective/dark. There will be nothing similar to UTAD, Crash, or BTCS. That's my prediction.
