i always played this a different way before i saw the correct dave way on the site, my question is, when you play the open B and high e string, do you hammer down on them with your pointer finger after you play emm open and before you switch to the next chord? any feedback would be well appreciated, i thought my old way was fine, which was a g power chord--then a hammer on on the B and high e, and then a F sharp power chord hammering on the B and high e, if any one has some suggestions or problems with the same matter, please post your thoughts,

I hammer on the 2-2 on the b and e strings with my index finger - but not the tip of my index but rather the inside part of my index which would be fretting the b and e strings if I was barring an F# chord. I believe that's how Dave does it.

and so on. it takes practice.

good, and you?
not sure how he does it now, but definitely hammered down with the tip of his index finger early on in his career. The best video for that is the 12-23-93 video. Also a good one for a cool ending to 'Warehouse.'
How he does it now, maybe more like a normal human being and uses the bottom part of his finger. But with guitar playing, Dave has never been 'normal.' Hell, even that extension he does when not using his pinky is strange and difficult.

yea, the 12-23-93 video was the one that i watched, he clearly does it like that there... never seen a newer one so i dont know... My friend and I play nancies together a lot and I use the tip of my finger, he uses the lower part, we sound identical, so much so that it sounds like one guitar when you record it sometimes... Also in the videos with the tabs its done with the tip, but i think either way is preferable
he uses the flat part of his index finger. 1993-12-28 Dave Matthews - The Record Exchange - Charlotte, VA.mpg that video has a clear shot of his finger. I was gonna screen cap the pic, but forgot you need video capture
. The video has a camcorder date of 12-28-00 i'm sure many of you have seen it.

all i know is that when i play it i strum those 2 chords and at the right time lift my index off and let those e and B strings ring, rhythmically, like start strumming them when ur finger is on and then take it off at the right moment. practice and u will find the right moment, but that's how i do it and it sound exactly like L@LC and the rest.
Maybe we're talking about the same thing. From my experience when someone refers to the tip of your finger, to me this indicates using the very tip of your finger to fret, i.e. your finger is almost perpendicular to the fret board. Based on this theory, if you were to use the tip of your finger, your finger tip would need to be thick enough to fret 2 strings at the same time. Otherwise you would use the inside of your finger to cover the 2 strings, i.e. your finger is now parallel to the fret board. My finger isn't thick enough to fret 2 strings so I use the inside of my index finger. It looks like Dave does the same. Not that either way really matters. If you can get it to sound right then play it that way.The Dreaming Tree wrote:uh, i dont know what youre watching dude but i'm watching that very same video right now and he clearly moves his whole hand and uses the tip of his finger, he doesnt just set it down... i cant video capture either, i know i used to be able to with snagit but it isnt working anymore

i doubt my reply will really "clear" anything up, but.... he uses the "fingerprint" part of his index finger to hit the b and e strings during the changes. it's definitely not the "side" of the finger. second, i don't think it should really be called a "hammer" in this case, as a hammer indicates that you dont strum the note after putting the finger on it. he does, however, so it is actually just a strum.. peace
