dave's style of strumming

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Try Two Step. Although it is a very fast rhythm, it is also simple.
Just your standard Down-Up-Down-Up, accenting the strum on the second "down" beat.

this WOULD be a lot easier if dave would just come on over and go, "no dude, ya do it like this." still, good feedback all. i mostly use a pick on my acoustic, but fast stumming hasn't been something i've spent much tme trying to learn, mostly cuz it seems so awkward. but i've recently figured out that if you simply sit down and strum down, up, down, up, down, up, down, up a few thousand times, you'll slowly learn how to control your pick and add speed and rythem to your strumming. which is really fuckn fun when you finally get it down. it helps to use a thin pick too. i also broke my first guitar string, so i guess i've technically lost my guitar cherry. i think if i had started off learning how to strum fast/well when i first picked up the guitar, i'd be a lot better now. that fast strummin is the foundation of all dave's music.

i really like the idea of the lesson vids included on the tabs. it helps so much to clearly watch someone (good) play -- both strumming a fingering. can people post their own vids here?

props to jkanter for runnin this ship. very cool site. :D

lordmelt: got the pic off of hightimes.com. the first one i tried to upload wouldn't work cuz it was too big a file size. i think it only allows pics that are 6k or less, which is tiny. search the web for ganjabelia

I believe that's right, but I'm not positive without a guitar...anyway, good luck...just keep at it and listen and watch the video's on this site...peace all
Hey jkanter, I had a question about this rythm. When you say Down(pause), Down, Up, Down, Up, do you mean this:

Hit bass note, Down(pause), Down, Up, Down, Up. Or does your Down(pause) represent hitting the bass note?

So is this correct?
bass, Down(pause), Down, Up, Down, Up THEN
bass, Down(pause), Down, Up, Down

and repeat that?

or did you mean exactly what you said, and the Down(pause) is the bass note.

Please help! :) Thanks!

CRASH: what seems to sound right to me is:

after hitting each bass note (E or A string), then:

down(pause), up, down, up, down ....on the D,G,B strings, in a fast strum/flick motion

i like the [up,down,up, down] motion (on the D,G,B), instead of [down, up, down, up]. it just sounds right to me when done at the proper speed

....my two cents

What you should for Crash is get into playing the drums in 4th grade through 12th grade, then come to the conclusion that chicks dont ask for requests on the drums and guitars are more portable. Thats what i did, and i can play crash fine and all the rhythms that are challenging for others, but still can't get any chicks. It might have something to do with the face....

But seriously, When i first started to learn crash i tried to hit the bass note then get in as many strums as possible in before the next bass note. Its hard to explain I guess, I'll just shut up now.
