That too. Playing it in 6/8 would be playing it slower than it actually is. The Dave and Tim version which I have as a Powertab file is in 3/4 and thats the way its actually played.Coldchillin wrote:Satellite is 3/4, not 6/8. They have a totally different feel.

I know i'm new to the boards, but this thread got me interested.
I think it wouldnt matter how you conduct Satellite. Yeah, 3/4 and 6/8 have a different feel, being that 3/4 has three beats a measure and 6/8 has two... unless you really feel like conducting 6 beats.
I'm listening to this recording they did in aussie 3.21.05 and i can conduct it in both through out the whole song in 3/4 and 6/8 . But, Satellite is best suited for 6/8 because of what one member said "3/4 is like a waltz and 6/8 is like a swing" and satellite is definately a swing.

Swing has longer feeling notes. Tap your foot to the freaking beat. 1+, 2+, 3+, 1+, 2+, 3+...
I'll record Satellite in 3/4 and 6/8 swing this week. BK, you KNOW what I am talking about between the differences in feel.

satellite is most definately in 6/8. listen to where the drums come in. if any of you read my post on the differences in 3/4 and 6/8, this will make more sense, since the snare hits on beat 4 of 6/8, and generally speaking, you wouldnt see 2 measures of 3/4 grouped that way, where the bass drum hits on beat one of the first measure, and snare on beat one of the second (hope this makes sense).
however, "swing" vs "waltz" feel, playing 6/8 this slow makes it feel waltzy.

Yea cause in Satellite each bar is two sets of 3 8th notes attached, the Powertabs are written that way and it is correct.Beauford33 wrote:Even though 3/4 has 6 eigths notes in itColdchillin wrote:Yeah, it's certainly in 3/4. No doubt.
And I dont even know why Im arguing though, I dont really care that much

Tap your foot to "Sat-ellite" the words, 1, 2, 3. Then if you listen to the guitar riff, where it ends, it ends on one. Tap your foot. The last note hits on 1 and then TWO beats of rest, then back into it. Does someone have a sheet music book?
EDIT: I really don't care anymore because it really makes no difference to me.

7/4 and 9/4 are rare time signatures....verrrrry rare...So Damn Lucky is not in 4/4....it is in 12/8. The 8th notes get the pulse (triplet feel) 12/8 can be counted in fours but the real name of it would be 12/8....Im gunna listen to all the songs with odd time signatures...(pretty sure dreaming tree if anything is 7/8)
Cheers!!

I always thought of Satellite as alternating between a 3/4 and 6/8 feel. Look at any video of Dave playing it solo or with Tim. The main riff verse part is more of the 3/4 waltz feel, but then when he transitions to "winter's cold" the groove changes, and he taps that part in 6. It maintains the same tempo throughout the song, and many people consider 3/4 and 6/8 the same thing. But I've always just looked at it as "it feels different." But whatever works for you.

I'm pretty sure that Rapunzel is 5 4, 6 4 in transition to verse, 4 4 verse, 6 8 bridge (I think the world of you..."), then 4 4 jam... #34 is 9 8 for most of the song. The little break down is 6 8, then (a little confusing) 3 8, 4 4, 9 8, 6 8 in quick succession. 9 8 instead of 9 4 because 9 8 is actually a derivative of 3 4. Seven is 4 4 intro, 7 8 verse/chorus, 5 8 break down. You and Me is 6 8. Squirm is 12 8. Is it me, or is the chorus of Pig in 7 8...? Happy Dave listening... Cheers.
