Song that Jane Likes
Hey grave, I didn't remember which thread your question about STJL was in, but the key is G major

The F major is a bVII, or flat Seven, if you don't know roman numeral stuff. It's not anything that he gets away with, per se, just a harmony that's not used nearly as much. It can be used as an applied IV of IV, which kinda wierd, but it usually happens that way. For instance, if a song is in G, if an F is played, the chord that follows is usually either a C or an Am, which is the relative minor of C. Dave doesn't really treat the chord well in TSTJL, as he doesn't resolve it properly. I don't remember all the ways it can resolve, but I'm pretty sure that the way he does it is wrong. The E major is a VI#, or Six sharp three, meaning the third scale degree is raised. Another oddball harmony, but not one that's wrong, per se. When Dave actually uses the E, it's mainly in the transition, which modulates to Am. The chords are E (dominant of Am), Am (tonic), and F (the VI of Am, which is the third most important chord in minor, after the tonic and the dominant). So really, you have to think about the E in relation to those other chords as opposed to G major, as the G is not the harmony in play at that time.
Oh, and secondary dominants happen to kick butt.

ok, I see. but in the verses, he doesn't intend to resolve the Fmajor, which is pretty much just an F5 in effect, but he slides up to that D11 chord or whatever you want to call it (x-5-4-0-3-5) which resolves very nicely to G. he seems to slither in to the key of Am at "The days keep scrbbling themselves In tidy lines" part when instead of going to D11 he slides down to Emajor which tonicizes the Am and then lands back on the Fmajor than to the D11 which goes back into G. does that make any sense?

I have to admit most of that is greek to me as well. I only maintain a very basic and crude understanding of basic music theory. There seem to be a lot of people on this board who are quite knowledgeable on music theory. I wonder if it would be possible to get some volunteers to start from the very beginning and post online weekly lessons. We could all asks questions and finally get all this straight for ourselves. I know I feel like I could benefit from it as a guitarists AND a musicians.
Anyone else with me on this? Jkanter - what do you think?

Hey, Kevin, we had a theory thread going in the past, here's the link for that. If you have any other questions, I'm sure a number of us would be happy to answer them...

I'd like to get a thread going on theory, maybe one that's more centered towards Dave songs. something like "Dave songs - theoretically speaking" or something like that. we can talk about keys, chords, notes, just breaking the song down to understand why the damn songs sound so GREAT besides the fact that Dave is a genius.
I'll definately like to contribute in this some how.
