They might be popular(dmb) but around where i live nobody has a clue who they are.. so to me, they're a jam band that loves to play

I was just pointing out that being called a pop group isn't really a bad thing. It generally includes anything that was commercially successful no matter what genre.

Where do you live? Its got to be out west somewhere...

Second, theyre not even close to a jamband. Their improvisation is highly structured and repetitive night in and night out. But thats probably a topic for another thread.

I find jam band at least as offensive if not more.
Why would you say that? They jam, and it's what they do best. There aren't many bands that can get out on stage and just connect like they do. And mbgreen, why does jamming have to be unstructured?

Thats called taking a solo. Theres a difference. Dmb does not jam. Various members solo. I know just as well as they do when they are going to solo. With jambands I have no clue. Or not much of one anyway.

I don't think "being a jam band" is offensive at all, but that's just my opinion.

Ok, I would agree that they pretty much play the same jams everytime, but if you think about it, they had to come up those jams at some point, which means that they would have to jam to come up with it, at least I think that's how they do it.

Nice article. Cool background info. As for the jam band part, I would have to agree with unccharlotte07. A lot of their jams turn into songs eventually and their ability to improvise on the spot makes it hard for me not to consider them a jam band. That's why concerts are never perfect thus adding to the beauty of live music.

So Journey is a jam band? Theyve got some pretty wailing solos, and they obviously had to jam at one point to come up with those solos...? Dmb is NOT a jamband. Do you guys listen to any jambands? MOE., WSP, Phish, etc? If you do, the difference should be incredibly apparent. The structure to their songs is far more flexible. Look at Lie in our graves. I know exactly when boyd is going to take ALL of his solos. Hell, I know how many measures all but one of them will be played for. The only question is whether or not the last "jam" is going to be 1 minute or 10. Jambands constantly change the very structure of their songs. They'll drift into different keys, transforming the song into something totally unrecognizeable from what they started with.

Now, I love DMB as much as the next guy. But theyre not a jamband.

Crush in "live at central parK" sounds to me like a jam session near the end of it. .. in montreal i heard a jam for the longest time in "Grace is Gone" Also in Ottawa i heard them play a 40 minute version of #41, along with Bela fleck. .. Now they jammed there man.. There are obvious parts where they solo to, i. e tripping billies, lie in our graves, they all take their parts, excluding dave... They do both in my opinion.
Its like... getting two birds stoned at once. (Ricky-trailor park boys).
