How am I doing?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

How am I doing?

Unread post by mehudson » Thu Mar 18, 2004 2:53 pm

Okay, I have been reading the posts around here for a few weeks, and it seems like there are a decent amount of people who are really good at this whole guitar playing thing. I am new to the scene - just got my first guitar for Christmas, and I want to figure out if I am progressing well. Here are the Dave songs that I have going so far... let me know what you think, or where to go from here to keep learning good stuff. Thanks

Songs I know (ie. can play along with the album)

Halloween
Grey Street
Big Eyed Fish
Bartender
Granny
What You Are
#40
#34
Satellite
So Damn Lucky
Rhyme & Reason
Dancing Nancies

Songs I've almost got down

Gravedigger
Stay or Leave
Pay for What you Get
The Last Stop
Stay (Wasting Time)
Crush
Crash Into Me
Long Black Veil (the DMB version)
One Sweet World
Tripping Billies (w/Nature Intro)

The non-Dave stuff I've figured out is either Country or Counting Crows.
I'm not trying to brag here, I just would like to know if I am actually figuring out how to play thing 6-string monster.

Thanks.

who knows, record some stuff and post it.... i thought i could play a lot of songs after a few months but in retrospect they all sounded a lot rougher than they do when i play them now... if you can play the tripping billies verse and satellite cleanly after 3 months youre doing pretty damn well

Well when you say that you've got them down, try playing them without the album and see how good you sound. And if you sound relatively close with the ones that you do know, I would say that are coming along quite nicely if you've learned those in 3 months. It took me about 6 months to get down about a handful of them, but after about a little over a year since I've been learning other Dave songs, I've got about 40ish down. So keep it going, you'll get them down in due time. Keeo trucking along! :-D

don't get offended by this, but I thought I could play OSW perfect,(I played to luther college) and then I recorded myself, and played it back and it was absolutley horrible, so you have record, and listen to the song, before you can judge your progression as a guitar player

I've said this before to someone who asked a similar question. Concentrate on the quality of a few songs. Learning how to play a bunch of songs sloppy will not help. As much as you think you "have them down" you probably don't. I think complacency is the biggest pit-fall of begginers. I would also recommend learning other artists. I'll admit when I first started playing it was all Dave but I realize now that it's extremely important to learn other styles/techniques early on. Just playing Dave will lock you inside a box and make it that much harder to break out. Not to mention you'll end up sounding like him when you start to write your own stuff.

i hope he knows that saying you can play a song means you can play the whole song not just all the riffs separate.

Thanks for all the input... to answer a few questions:

1. I am recording a bunch of stuff as we speak. (see you on that board)
2. I realize that what I play is probably horrible as compared to some of the rest of you.
3. Saying that "I can play a song" means just that... I can play the song... as in from beginning to end.
4. I am not trying to judge my own progress, I am trying to get an idea from some of the rest of you as to whether I am progresssing at a normal pace or not... just a certain level of curiosity. I don't know anyone out here that plays guitar, so I have noone to jam with or compare myself to.

Again, for those of you who offered constructive criticism and input, thank you very much.
