Crash Strumming....again

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Unread post by NoobGooN » Fri Feb 14, 2003 12:39 pm

hey guys im a noobie at the guitar...been at it for 3 months now. i can play crash really well, crisp and smoothly, but the strumming just doesnt sound right for some reason. what i do is i hit the bass note and then i go Down Up Down Up, hit the next bass note and then Down Up, and then i repeat. is this right or is there a way i can spice it up??? thanx

The best way to get it to sound like the origianl (if that is what you want) is to play along with a cd. Usually the Dave and Tim stuff is easier to follow.

Give it a try.

I odn't know man...I don't think about whether I go up or down...I jsut play it.

And it's hard to encapsulate and rythm jsut by saying up , down, up down.

There are slight pauses and notes are played faster. Trust me you'll get it. Just keep practicing man.

cricket is right about the whole not being able to tell rhythm from strum patters of up down up down, and the easiest way to learn will be playing along, but this is how i strum it (i think):

(C#m) bass down up up (A) bass down (B) bass down up up (E) bass down

etc...

I help with what I can, here's a sound clip, pretty clean, that might give you some help.

if that doesn't work, go here: http://www.cs.und.edu/~chrisa/dmb and download the crash.mp3

Crash Strumming

I hit down on the bass notes, then alternate between down down up and down up down up on the parts following the bass notes...thats what it sounds an looks like to me...i think the only hard part about playing it this way is hitting the bass notes in rythm.

I think the hard part is keeping that triplet rythm goin when you start to sing. :D

i always found crash tough for me. That whole rythm just gave me fits. It took me a while, but i got it. I think crash is harder than alot of dmb songs,
LIOG, Halloween, What Will Become of Me, AATW
are all easier than Crash.

I think thats why #41 is tough for me.
anna kournikova, that is all i have to say.

I agree on most, but the LIOG rhythm doesn't work for me. When I sing I really start to rush it and my vocals get off a bit. Crash is actually really easy for me. But I can't get PM or TS.
