Warehouse instructional?
I can't find any decent guitar instructionals on how to play Warehouse. There's lots of stuff on YouTube, but everything I saw there got the rhythm all wrong. I need a tutorial by a Warehouse purist. If it's unclear what I'm talking about, go back to the roots of Warehouse -- Record Exchange Store 12/28/1993 -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auOI5TA2mSc -- now THAT is how you play Warehouse.
Any ideas? I can't find a YouTube of the L@LC Warehouse. is there one floating around somewhere?

Re: Warehouse instructional?
I think its the flawless timing between the 3rd and 4th note of the main riff combined with a more even up and down stroke (i.e. no accenting). Even he doesn't play it like that anymore.
Do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?

Here's a video I made a while back that might help. I play it the original way, and a more modern version, and then play it slowed down. I noticed on the slowed down part of the video I use my index, ring, and pinky fingers on the descending bit instead of the index, middle, and ring fingers like Dave. I prefer that method personally, as it makes it easier for the reach, and you don't have to keep moving your thumb around the back to help the stretch. Try both ways and do what works best for you.

The key thing is the muting. Don't focus on hitting each individual note precisely - it's played very percussively, striking 3 or 4 strings at once. Lightly keep your index, middle, and pinky fingers over the strings after you fret them for the ascending bit (the 7 9 11), and when you get to the 7 on the G string with your index finger, mute the bottom three strings by hanging that finger lightly over the strings so they won't sound while your picking hand is going crazy with the up and down motions. It takes lots of practice to get it to sound good, but it's great once you get it down.

Re: Warehouse instructional?
That is probably the best instructional I've seen, taparoo, thanks.
The more I play it, the more I realize that it's not as sloppy as some other players think it is-- I think Dave really nails 2 strokes each on 7 -- 9 -- 11, then immediately to 7th fret G string. Whereas, everybody else just strums it feverishly and puts their fingers in the right spots and hope it comes out right in the wash.
I agree and slightly disagree with RunsWithBuffalo -- I agree that it's the timing between the 3rd and 4th note of the main riff that is key to the Record Exchange Store "purist" version, and I agree with RunsWithBuffalo that even Dave doesn't play it with that exact timing between those 2 notes anymore.
But I slightly disagree that it's a more even up and down stroke with no accenting. Let me step back, and admit that the whole Record Exchange Store version has a constant, steady up and down rhythm to it. But I really think that what makes that version so pure is the accenting that Dave does -- specifically, he accents the 1st beat (down stroke), and the next accent I think is the up stroke (the half note) after the 2nd beat. Notably, I think it's that second "accent" that Dave changes in his current version -- he moves it to the 3rd beat (down stroke).
Just my 2 cents. I certainly am not great at playing it, so I hope I don't come across self-righteous.

Re: Warehouse instructional?
yeah, seeing that Record Store video made me play Warehouse constantly for weeks until I got it down. I still can't do it EXACTLY how Dave does it, but it's a crash course on Dave's muting technique...
A Master of Karate and friendship for everyone!
Re: Warehouse instructional?
I've been at this song for months and everytime I think I have it, I change it!! Then im all mixed up in what was once almost right and and now completely wrong. Its a vicious cycle trying to perfect a song like this. Hopefully one day it will just click into place...

Like a lot of Dave tunes, im amazed at how different they can sound because of right hand technique.

Re: Warehouse instructional?
well everyone how about daves style strumming? for warehouse especially i believe it to play a major part of gettin this song down. i know its a major part of all his songs but it seems to me that if your cant strum like dave then u cant play this song. hahah and im not saying any of you cant play this song cuz sum people who post here can really rock any dave tune out but for a learner such as myself i still have trouble with the way dave strums so i just make the best out of what i can do with any dave song. Does anyone wanna start up a video for lessons in Daves strumming?

Re: Warehouse instructional?
you are skipping the last note of the second time through, thus throwing your timing off, you have to walk down that A string on 10 9 and 7, the 7 is what you are missing

Taparoo, do you still have your video for this? The link no longer works, but I would appreciate your instructional video.
