Ants Marching Question

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Ants Marching Question

Unread post by 41suitewhirled » Sat Mar 20, 2010 5:02 pm

hey everyone

im fairly new to guitar but recently started taking lessons a few months ago...my teacher wants me to get ants down by next week...i have most of the parts down but i am having trouble with the part immediately following the D and G chords...im not talking about the slides but rather those two beats right after the D and G and right before the slides...i cant figure out if dave is muting with his left hand or palm muting with his strumming hand (or if im wrong about the muting all together?)...does anyone know the right way to do this?

thanks in advance for the help!

Mute with your fretting hand, I do four strums, down up down up.

I do both now (pretty sure that's what Dave does, but could be wrong, sounds like it though). But, when first starting out, I just muted the fret hand.

Seems a bit unnecessary but as long as it works for you.

Depends on how you're playing it. It is essentially just a rest for one foot tap in between D/G and the slides. Strumming on the rest isn't needed or required, as I think Dave just rests a lot of the time full band with no strumming. If you're playing it solo and just want to add some percussion then strums on rests like that help a lot, and I do it myself if I'm playing aggressive. Anyways, I think you can just freestyle how do it since there's no certain way Dave does it.

Out of curiosity I watched Central Park just to see, and I can tell you for sure that Dave mutes and goes UP, DOWN, and possibly another UP on the way to the slides. So it is 2, 3 at most. This is the way I was already doing it naturally just to match up by ear so I'm pretty confident this is how to do it, if you're trying to emulate Dave that is.
