Hey everyone,
I was wondering if I could get some constructive criticism on the SMTS riff that I have played here.... http://tinypic.com/player.php?v=29vkqyw&s=5
Besides the choppiness, bad timing, and rhythm, what else is going on here? To me it just does not sound right...
Any insight would be much appreciated...
Thanks

Re: SMTS help
I dont know if its the tabs you have or the ones I have, but it was nails on a chalkboard every time you did the first slide, and you didnt slide to the fifth fret. You seemed to stop at the fourth every time, giving it a "didnt quite make it feel". 3/5, thats what you need, in my opinion. Other than that, fine.

That part for sure is off. Also, after the 1-3-5 part, the slide sounds a little off. I take it from 4 all the way down to 10 where the chord: 10 x 7 10 x x chord is. That chord itself sounds a little off, make sure you're playing that right. Otherwise pretty good, just needs a little polishing.

cool thanks for the replies...I will take a closer look at my slides and make sure I hit all the chords correctly. I should probably slow down the tempo, then speed it up when I call nail on the notes and chords accurately.
Re: SMTS help
It seems like you're holding your left hand too straight up when doing the first slide, and instinctively stopping at the 4 instead of the 5 because you want your pinky in place for the 5-5-5. Try holding your hand at sort of a 45 degree angle to the fret, which allows the tip of your middle finger and your pinky to be more parallel and will make it easier to hit the 5-5-5 quickly. Also slow it down till you get the feel of it and are hitting all the notes correctly, then speed it up. Its a tough riff, you're already playing it decent so don't get discouraged. I had to play it everyday for months before I really got it perfect. The Central Park DVD has a real good close up of Dave playing the riff, it helped me see the best way to hold my hand when playing it. You can check out the YouTube video to see what I mean about the 45 degree angle.
