It's based around d major actually... this will probably start another b minor/ d major debate. Even though I'm right.w0odman wrote:the little riff in lie in our graves is from the Bm pentatonic
First off, people should know that scales are the building blocks of all melody and harmony. If you hear a song it's going to be based around a scale. They are not magical little patterns used exclusively for soloing.
Dave uses mainly major/minor scales to create his melody's. On song's like Last Stop and Minarets there's a obvious middle eastern melody to it. I'm not sure exactly what scale hes using but the harmonic minor is the most popular "eastern" sounding scale. For the most part Daves use of harmony and melody is pretty simple. He hardly ever uses extended chords (maj7,min7,dom7, etc.). So basically major/minor. Shows you how much can be made from the same scale.
If you really want to know about it then your gonna have to study it just like learning any other language.
MWR is right. The little riffs he pulls out bettwen chords are mostly from the natural major or minor scales, depending on the key of the song.
As far as harmony goes, the coolest thing dave uses is a lot of inversions of the chords (i.e. 'alternate fingering'). The 'dave chords' as people like to call them are usually just regular major/minor chords with the notes (I,III,V) inverted! And it sounds great!
