Mr. Jones is not about his penis. He addresses that rumor on the storytellers video of Mr. Jones. It's a funny clip actually. The two different acoustic versions of Mr. Jones that are floating around are both amazing and deserve a listen. Colorblind is also a fantastic song. Lyrically I think Duritz is fantastic, but tends to write too much sometimes, which Dave is definitely guilty of too.

To clear up the confusion between I'll Back You Up and The Song That Jane Likes:

The Song That Jane Likes was the first song, music-wise, that Dave wrote. In interviews, Dave has commented that the song has no literal connection or inspiration from his sister except that she liked the tune. The lyrics, from what I remember, literally are meaningless and are derived from various theater/stage events from Dave's earlier acting career.

I'll Back You Up, the first song totally completely by Matthews, was actually a proposal for one of the three times (presumably the first) he asked Julia Grey to marry him. Of course we all know how that turned out.....Halloween.

personally, I always look at a song differently when it comes to the lyrics and the actual music. As a struggling songwriter, I find it very difficult to match lyric to music. So from that stand point, I would say anyone who can grab your attention with a song, for whatever reason, musically or lyrically. Between Adam Duritz and Dave Matthews......Dave has pioneered new ground, The counting crows simply have not. Dave has influenced many new artists, like john mayer, howie day, etc... but is that necessarily a bad thing? Everyone is influenced by the music they like. Ask any of the dude's from the '70s rock bands and they reference the delta blues and stuff. I basically forgot my point but....... I think you get where I'm going!
