stone muting

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

stone muting

Unread post by Duffman » Sat Jan 24, 2004 2:24 am

how do you guys play the stone? do you just pick the right string? or do you play it similar to warehouse where you mute the string you aren't playing. i play it picking the string, but i'm trying to play it like dave and do the whole strumming thing. i think doing the strumming helps with the timing of the song. so all you struming, learn me how.

well dude...its not like he's strumming like you would in a chord progression. he doesn't exactly picks. he just kinda hits in that general area. so you mute maybe 2 or 3 strings, and leave the other note. you don't have to mute EVERYTHING. just don't play em.

I can play it both ways.. it's good to show it off either way:-p but seriously, if you can't get the muting down, just play it picking each string..

I did a video of the stone some weeks ago. Do a search, the thread's called "here are the videos" or something like that

it's a kind of loose pick. You pick, but you normaly hit the outside strings, and you mute those by just resting your fingers in a way that they lay on or touch the suurounding strings.

loose picking is the best way to describe it. Take a look at the Charlie Rose video. It's the kind of thing you can do if you don't think about it.
The harder you try to play like that the more you fuck it up. If that makes any sense.

I don't know if this works for anyone else but it does for me.. Just strum up and down on the one string you need.. It may take a while but its good to know for when soloing and stuff.. just a thought...

Um, I have no idea how you mute with a strumming hand. So, no, the fretting hand.

i just keep it loose. dont focus on either muting or individually picking.
keep fingers down so that even if you hit other strings, they are muted.

sometimes i pick while palm muting, but thats more of an electric thing.... not that that has any relevance to the stone

i just losely pick and the better i get at it the more of a strumming motion i get... its just practice and how smoothly you can pick and mute with your left

actually i found that if you palm mute it while you are strumming that it sounds a lot more like dave plays it. i got that from the video of him at kfog radio or something but if you listen, the strings he's picking don't exactly ring out, it seems like he is just BARELY touching the strings with the side of his strumming hand. try it :) i think you'll really like the sound of it, but when i say barely i mean just BARELY.
