So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Hey, all! I'm a drummer who has been wanting to learn how to play the guitar so I can have something to strum around the house with. My wife and parents surprised me with an acoustic for Christmas and I haven't been able to put it down since. Here's my question, I've learned some of the basic chords and a couple of real easy fills, but I want to learn a some dmb stuff and am stuck. I can't figure out what " A---4----7----3
D----x------9----,etc..." means. I'm sure that is a real stupid question, but if someone could just shed some light on that and maybe help me figure out a song or two. I really want to learn Grey Street & Save Me as fast as I can and my wife is asking me to learn Loving Wings before anything else. Can anyone please give me some wisdom and much needed help?!?!?! Thanks so much!

Sorry, one more thing-I'm sort of guitar illiterate at the moment as I am just now learning. If possible maybe you could put some advice in poor lowly drummer laymen terms

. Thanks again so much. Take care!

Okay, thanks. Sorry that I didn't even think to check the faq, my bad! So, bascially if I'm understanding this correctly the numbers represent the coordinating strings/notes to tune the guitar to? Is that right? Sorry again for the ignorance on my end. The drums are a whole nother world away for me than this!

Okay, I'm starting to get this figured out. But,......how do I know which chords to play? In other words if I put my left hand on the second string, fifth fret, what note/chord do I play? Does that make sense? Probably not because I'm still kinda screwed up with this. Thanks for the patience. Again, any and all help is greatly appreciated.

the numbers on the string lines mean the fret your supposed to play on that string. they go in order of time. for example in save me:
Code: Select all
Intro/Fill
E:-------------
B:-------------
G:---4---------
D:---5---3--5--
A:---5---------
E:-3-3---------
1 1 4
first, you would push the low E string, 3rd fret with your index finger (the 1 under the 3 refers to the finger your supposed to use) and strum it by itself. then you would form a g barr chord which is represented by the 3554 on the tab. you push down each string in the fret that the number says. for the last part, you would play only the d string in the 3rd fret using your index finger, then the d again in the 5th fret using your pinky (the 4).
soo...

that in tab form would look like this:
Code: Select all
E:----
B:--5-
G:----
D:----
A:----
E:----
you would just play the b string pushing the 5th fret only.
that link that winglet82 gave explains it better, there are three sections to it.

Duffman-
Thanks so much for the mini-lesson! I think I actually might be starting to figure this thing out. I really appreciate it. If anyone else has any suggestions/help, just feel free to post away. Thanks!
