Making WWYS sound right

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Making WWYS sound right

Unread post by bbr89 » Fri Jan 04, 2008 7:22 pm

I tried searching but it kept saying "no suitable results". So anyways...

Does anyone have any tips on how to make the Intro/Verse riff for WWYS sound right? I'm playing every night in the tab on this site and it just doesn't sound right at all. The main part that sounds off is the part right after the slides, the E5 B5 E5.

Code: Select all

E:--------------------------------------------------
B:-----------------3/5-----5----------2^3^2--0------
G:-----------4\2-------------------------------2----
D:-------5-------------------------2-------------2--
A:--------------------------------------------------
E:-3/5-------------------5---5--3-------------------

Yeah I have been and am about to now.

There was one other part I forgot to mention though. I notice when listening to Dave play it that you can hear mutes around the part I mentioned. So I was kind of wondering if maybe he was actually playing something a little differently.

well you are holding those 5's at the same time so you are putting your pinky on the b string and your ring finger on the E string and laying it flat to mute all the strings inbetween

That 2^3^2 should be a bend on the 2...

My suggestion is for you to practice other Dave songs, like So much to say, Rhyme and Reason, etc.

Yeah I have practiced a lot of other ones. And that 2^3^2 is a bend I copied that exactly from the main site.

I have tried having a finger on the B and the E at the same time. But the tab doesn't have them stacked, so do you just play them so fast that you end up kind of strumming a chord like 5XXX5-?

yeah, you kind of strum it meaning you catch the b string on the upstroke and the E on the downstroke

strum it, don't pick it, and keep the rhythm. play along with the song, the notes on the tab are right you just have to play with the right rhythm.
Sometimes when I reflect on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. I think, "It is better to drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver.

That tab has the right notes, but it leaves out all the little mutes in between the notes that you have to hit to make it sound right. The posted video, for instance plays all the notes correctly but leaves out most of the percussive mutes. The advice above saying to strum instead of pick is a good place to start. Your right should always be moving. Even on the bend, when the right hand doesn't really need to be doing anything, you'll notice on most videos that Dave's right hand is strumming the air above the strings, to keep time. UTTAD makes it pretty easy to isolate Dave's guitar part for the most part. Load it up in winamp/itunes or whatever you use, and pan the sound to the left. (You'll still hear both guitar parts, but Dave's will be prominent) If you pan all the way to the right you'll hear Tim's part a lot louder. Tim's part is more melodic with less mutes with the kick ass vibrato in the bend. Dave's part is more rhythmic, with more mutes, and a stiffer bend.

I bend it up, and I think Dave does too. It doesn't really matter, but I think it would be easier to bend up.
