- Political views: Whatever is convenient at the moment.
- Random movie quote to make you seem hip and "with it": The dishes are done, man.
- Location: NJ. Not by choice.
I'm too lazy to dig up the actual quote, but it went something like this:Ranting Thespian wrote:"i know he uses weed to help get some of the thoughts out..... "
he has never said that, or mentioned anywhere close to that.
"So Dave, what inspires your writing?"
"Love, life, alcohol, hangovers..."
Tripping Billies was inspired by an acid trip. I'm sure at least half of what dave wrote was the product of being under some chemical influence.

When I write songs, I usually come up with a guitar riff first. I've written five or six, but I don't play two of them anymore because I didn't like them!
I'll be sitting around playing random stuff and I'll all of a sudden start to play something new. It might take a few times of playing it (maybe a few days) for it to develop. From there, I'll think of something to write about, sit down with my guitar, pen, and paper, and write!
I try to stay away from simple chord progressions though, like basic bar chords or open chords. I certainly use them in my songs, but I like to make them more difficult -- definitely influenced by Dave's weird chords. I don't even know what some of the chords are that I use, although I know the root and if they are major or minor. I throw in a lot of notes too. I think I get bored with playing all simple chords -- like some difficulty and some stretches in there!!
One question for you all: I wrote a song the other night about my ex ... we stopped seeing each other last week. The last line of the second verse is "Oh what will become of me?" Now I know Dave has used that line a few times in his songs and I was wondering, does that make me a ripoff artist? haha. It just sort of fit the rest of the verse so I threw it in. And I think it's an awesome line.
Let me know what you think.

No i most definitely wouldn't call that a ripoff at all , you can't keep making up new word lines all the time , im sure you could compare a million Dave lines with songs that are 30 years old , its not a ripoff at all , its not like you take half a verse from the guy so it ain't a rip , now on the other hand if it were most of a verse , then i would call it a rip , a bad one even , but we're talking about 6 words here , so i would go with it if i were youjtdevan wrote:One question for you all: I wrote a song the other night about my ex ... we stopped seeing each other last week. haha. yeah that's what I thought. And it fits the song so perfectly that I HAD to use it. I am curious though: to those of you that write stuff, do you follow my pattern of using more difficult chords and notes? Or do you use simple open and bar chords?? I use those chords too, but not all the time.

I mostly use completely different tunings , don't want all the standard things that most of the planet uses , so its good to experiment

thanks alot DustyDave for the downloading tips...
hahaha funny stuff eze3484
when i'm writing, it all depends on what sort of mood i'm in and suprisingly that effects my chords and guitar riffs.....i'll play basic chords and stuff when i'm happy and "in the clouds" but if i'm actually writing about something that means a little more i do more complicated stuff....with alot of individual note picking......you can always combine wierd chords, basic ones and throw some quick fills in around them.........
ps. i heard that dave was addicted the heroin in the past, is that true?

Yeah that's cool man. I try to do that too. I keep meaning to sit down one of these nights, put my guitar in some weird tuning, and see what comes to mind. Now that I have my boss chromatic tuner pedal, it will be a lot easier.DustyDave wrote:I mostly use completely different tunings , don't want all the standard things that most of the planet uses , so its good to experiment

say where does "eat drink and be merry" come from?...I know about "ring around the rosie" and you can say that "like a diamond in the sky" is copied to...but what about "eat drink and be merry" is that from another english song, too?
I'm german so I don't know if it's from a saying or any song.
