I've read this post and want to offer some advice to adamondo. I don't mean to be preachy but more to put you on a straighter path that will increase your knowledge. Basically with guitar you need to teach yourself a lot of things. Strums patterns are all learned by ear. Start with simple songs, preferably one that move slowly and are acoustic. For musically uninclined people like me it has taken a long time to learn to listen to music and draw out the strum pattern. It is even more difficult with DMB where on many songs unless you are listening to a Dave and Tim acoustic version it's hard to hear just Dave. Nonetheless like most things in life they are sweeter when you've accomplished them yourself rather than have them given to you. So take the time to learn how to do it. It's cool you learned you to play this tune (I can't play it, but in the future it might be worth the while to literally sit in a chair with your guitar and your cd remote button for two hours until you figure it out.

Beauford, you're posts are not helpful at all. Instead of telling someone they need to count over and over again why don't you point them to something where they can learn how to?
Personally, counting never really helped me figure out the strumming patterns. It was mostly just listening to the song and knowing where I needed to end up at each interval. I'm curious to know if you have any training in the proper way of counting measures and time signatures. Sure, if you do then my tone is not warranted but coming from the musical background that I have, counting isn't always as easy as people say.
